saw once againe "El Laberinto del Fauno" (Pan's Labyrinth), and I incist in anyone who hasn't seen it to see it, it is an EXCELLENT movie, a creepy childs tale, and the scenes of violence are intence since it takes place when the Spanish revolution was taking place. Watch it and you'll discover the magic of Gillermo del Toro.

Just saw another Dario Argento movie, Trauma. Considering it came around later in his career (around the mid 90s I think) it was quite good. Primarily a giallo, there's some haunting, almost supernatural material. All in all it was shot really well, some creepy scenes.

Gran Torino

11 out of fucking 10

I can't remember the last time I saw a movie so incredible, so powerful, so emotionally charged. I absolutely loved this movie. This is the first movie in a very long time to make me cry...the ending made me cry a pretty damn good amount. Clint Eastwood was fucking brilliant. Such an amazing movie.

Taken: Great movie that just flows so well. Also a good demonstration of the wonders of multiculturalism in France.

Hot Fuzz: Started watching it a few nights ago but fell asleep after an hour so I'll have to resit this one.

Tropic Thunder: Only saw this recently, it wasn't too bad, had its moments like the "nobody goes full retard" part lol.

I also agree with ChrisRedfield29 regarding Gran Torino.

Right now i'm watching Sweet Home. I didn't know that the game that inspired RE had a movie.

Scream
02-25-2009, 03:39 AM
I'm sure the game came first.

I watched Screamers - The Hunting last night. I liked the original Screamers, even though I thought it sucked the first few times I saw it, I grew to like it. Anyways, this one wasn't as bad as I expected for a straight to DVD movie. At least they got the gore right this time. It does rip off Aliens big time though. Not that that's a bad thing...

rewak
02-25-2009, 04:10 AM
Nope, the game was licensed from the movie, they were released at the same time though. It wasn't a bad movie, and you could see some similarities with RE, but not a whole lot.

I didn't actually bother playing the game so i dunno how much it relates to the movie, from the look of the trailer before the movie, not a whole lot. Did they use this image in one of the RE games? It looked familiar to me.

Black Sabbath, a horror anthology from the early 60s care of Mario Bava w/ Boris Karloff introducing the stories and starring in one of them. The first one is terrifying, the second one pretty good, and the third one damn creepy. It's good to see a movie that stresses buildup of the shocks, making them that much more chilling.

on another note i totaly forgot to add on my last post that i watched "Natural Born Killers"
damn that movies a fucking all time classicThe second half of the film (starting from the drug store part) is totally fucking awesome, I agree.

But I can't stand the first half of the film.. I think it was mainly the awkward sex scenes and the fact that I hate films where sex and killing are put together - thats not "pure" at all, thats just messed up. There's also the sitcom scene which is just weird and puts me off watching anymore..

Overall, I do prefer Stone's revised version over Tarantino's original script, I just wish they didn't add the parts with the indians and stuff. That was a waste of time and they talk about the indian guy later like he was some sort of god who shouldn't be killed. That was the same shit Romero was trying to peddle with his RE movie script (Chris the indian).

I also love Trent Reznor's work on the soundtrack. It's not just one style and it makes you feel a lot of different emotions, like a real story.

The completely screwed the last sequence which was the best sequence from the game, and then they gave you a BS epilogue thinking that they could ever secure a sequel for this awful movie. It had a massacred story and had about 1 action scene, that was just a very poor rip off from the Matrix lobby scene that we've seen a million times over. House Of The Dead is better because you come out the other side completely brain dead, so you don't remember just what you've been subjected to. That and the fact it doesn't try to be anything other than a cheap, crap, slow motion titty action movie.

Watched Watchmen last night.
It was absolutely fantastic.

It really is a visual masterpiece. There's a lot of stuff people evt. could pick on, but doing so means there's no way of pleasing you and the movie medium in general just isn't for you.

Some might not like the movie 'cause of minor tweaks to the original graphic novel's story, some might not like it 'cause of its slow pacing (which I bet will be even more slow once some extended/alternate cut appears w/evt. Tales of the Black Freighter added into the mix), heck, some might not even like 'cause of its content (be it original or from the source material), but there's no denying that this is still one hell of a fantastic movie.

Lady Snowblood. Based off of a manga, it's a vengeance flick that most likely inspired Kill Bill. Good staging/styling of scenes, but the timeline towards the beginning was arbitrarily skewed, with a lot of flashbacks/forwards.

I think "The Final Chapter" (the quotes are used to connote the grain of salt part 4's subtitle should be taken with 26 years down the line) has its moments, and it maintains a more consistent horror tone than the 3rd one. It's a swedish vampire movie based on the novel. It's about a boy who get's bullied all the time befriending a vampire girl. Cute, meaningful, violent. Great movie. Unfortunatly, a hollywood remake is coming in 2010, because we have to remake all great foreign movies and turn them into crap :) Plus, concerning a big part of the film:The girl vampire ends up being a castrated boy, but the hollywood version will most likely make it a straight forward boy/girl love story to catch some of "Twilight's" popularity...bullshit.

I'm currently forcing my way through Mutant Chronicles... and I'm in lack of words.

I didn't expect anything good, and good is certainly not what this is even close to being... Poor directing and editing, pointless scenes, more pointless CG effects than a modern George Lucas sci-fi movie and and absolutely terrible DVD transfer (or maybe it's just the movie's terrible filtering and effects in 99% of all scenes that makes it look absolutely terrible)

Let the right one in

Someone recently told me about this one. Can't believe I missed it.

I finally braced myself enough to watch Resident Evil Extinction. It was only £3 in HMV and i had a few quid left over from trading in a game so i thought might as well.

Urgh. The first Resident Evil film was mediocre but at least tolerable. Apocalypse was a pile of excrement in all regards and Extinction is not much better.

Once more it craps all over the games and ruins a series villain completely. And the Chairman Wesker crap was just awful. The only reason i dont hate it as much as Apocalypse was i had much lower expectations and at least the crappy Tyrant didnt start crying and wasnt in love with Mary Su- im sorry i mean Alice.

And watching the DVD extras is guaranteed to boil your blood. Not only does Paul W.S Anderson claim his films respect the games and take them to a logical conclusion (hah!), but also tries to take credit for the resurgence of the Zombie genre. Apparently it was nothing to do with '28 days later', 'Dawn of the Dead Remake' or 'Shaun of the Dead', no it was all down to his "masterpiece" Resident Evil. And its hilarious when he later claims that the running zombie was a completely original idea in Extinction.

God he's almost as bad as Uwe Boll.

...you know, they say laughter is good for you. When I take Anderson, hang him upside down from a tree and beat him like a party pinata until all that glorious stupid comes out the maniacal laughter will be most therapeutic.

That's Nicholas Roeg for you. Have you seen Don't Look Now? One of my favorite films (it might be my favorite).

Anyway, I just saw The Fog for the first time, and it's clear we need someone like John Carpenter making horror films these days. Just when I felt a little disappointed a shock kicks in and the rest of the film carries such great suspense. Plus, for anyone who's seen his films, this probably has the greatest number of his early familiar actors (the only one missing is Kurt Russell)

I Love You, Man was really funny. I love Jason Segel and Paul Rudd. They really show their comedic talent here, and it's funny how it almost seems ad-libbed how casual they are on certain subjects (the masturbation station XD)

Fast and Furious was awesome, I'd say as good as the first. Action, drama, and of course... cars. A fine package, indeed. I highly recommend both movies!

Also, my older brother and his girlfriend saw Adventureland. Absolutely horrible, according to them. Like, incredibly crap. Avoid at all costs.

I would say my favorite John Carpenter movie is either The Thing or Halloween. Assault on Precinct 13 shouldn't be overlooked though, even though the characterization at times is a little incongruous (western-type characters in a thriller) with the tone of the film. It's still suspenseful and it has one of the most ballsy scenes towards the beginning.

I was really looking forward to Chow finally getting back to making martial arts movies.

i bet he hasnt seen the best ones 1-4 were the best after 4 Friday the 13th went down hill
and is still going down that hill.

QFT. I was happy to see Jason's part 2 sack in the remake, as mediocre of a movie as that was. The first four movies, along with having great death scenes, were actually patient in pace and a little atmospheric.

the remake wasnt that bad.

but freddy vs jason was a complete disaster and a peice of shit.

Friday the 13th 5 the new beginning was really lame. its the worst one because its not even jason!
its some wanna be redneck fucktard lol.

Friday the 13th 6 Jason Lives. that was a terrible movie it seems like it was more of a comedy than anything.

Friday the 13th 7 (cant remember the name atm) was another terrible joke a girl with teleconesis? psshh please

Friday the 13 8 Jason goes to manhattan. you gotta be fucking kidding me!? Friday the 13th should be at Crystal Lake and Crystal Lake ONLY!

Friday the 13th 9 Jason Goes to Hell. the only good part was the beginning and where the guy starts to melt after having Jason's soul in him after that all of it was complete shit going into other shit in focus.

Friday the 13th 10 (or X w/e you perfer to call it) AHAHAHAHAH this is the worst movie of them all! the only good part was that there was eye candy in there other than that they should have scrapped that shit.

my rant is done.

As much as I hate it, I give Jim Carrey props for not giving in to the masses and making sequels. I mean, the only one he's really done is Ace Ventura 2. It's funny because many of his movies are so successful that they eventually make a sequel without him.

Dumb and Dumber-er
Son of the Mask
Evan Almighty (which I guess worked out w/ Steve C.)
Ace Ventura Jr.

yea, I think it's because he doesn't put out movie after movie ya know, he takes his time and waits for a good script. I wasn't a big fan of the the majestic, or the number 23, but not every movie can be good, and I know that a small part of Jim always wanted to be a serious actor so, whatever. As long as he keeps making comedies I'm perfectly fine with him making a "serious" movie. Hell, enternal sunshine of the spotless mind kind of serious and I thought it was pretty decent.

I have watched Never Surrender and Dead Space Downfall lately.

Dead Space Downfall was not bad. However Never Surrender whişch stars few MMA guys like Quinton Jackson, BJ Penn & GSP was a huge dissapointment. The lead star is the definition of a tree trunk. There is no lifew in any sort of movement he does througout the film.

But there are lots of love scenes with some guys that you might want to check it (with FWD button of the DVD Player in hand that is;) )

I'm currently battling insomnia and haven't slept in two days, so, this morning I watched "Shindler's list", immedietly followed by "Death Sentence". Shindler's list is an awesome movie that I've loved since I was I watched it when I was a kid (why the hell did anyone let me watch that?). Everyone in the movie is a superb actor, and it's directed by Speilberg, nuff said lol. Death sentence stars Kevin Bacon, and it's about a man who witnesses his twenty something yr. old song get murdered by a gang. After finding out the murderer will only get 3-5 years in prison, he decides to drop the charges and deliver justice himself...the Bacon way. I originally waited so long to watch this movie because at the time it was released, there was another "Renegade" movie out called "The brave one", which had a very similiar plot of having a loved one murdered, then taking the law into their own hands. In all fairness, it was writeen by the same author who wrote the famous "Death wish" stories, which is pretty much the godfather of these types of movies. However, I must say...it was pretty damn good. The story is kind of a rip off of taxi driver...especially towards later parts of the film, but it still adds many original elements to keep it fresh.

It's also directed by the young man who directed "Saw", and I think this was his first big non-horror movie and he did a job well done. There's plenty of gore, plenty of action, and suprisingly touching moments, all done with a very nice soundtrack. The soundtrack is actually something I might consider tracking down...the theme is pretty awesome. So, I recommend you see "Death Sentence", because it's a pretty good movie. Also, does anyone else think the leader of the gang looks like Jay from Jay and Silent Bob, but bald and on steroids?
Anyways, here's a spoiler pic for those of you who are wondering how badass Bacon is in this flick.http://cdn.videogum.com/img/thumbnails/photos/death_sentence.jpg

The Counterfeiters. The movie's about a group of Jews skilled at forging currencies who are transferred from more harsh Nazi concentration camps to a relatively loftier one to forge the pound and dollar for Germany. More than anything, a great variety of characters. Interesting stuff.

Plus I saw Akira Kurosawa's Kagemusha. I've never seen a film on such a large scale, and I'd use the word "epic" but it's thrown around too much that the value has been wrung from it and at present it's gasping feebly for air. Set during Japan's Sengoku period, this one's about a petty thief who impersonates the recently killed daimyo Takeda Shingen to prevent Tokugawa and Nobunaga from victory. When there isn't an immense set piece, the rest of the film is a great character drama. You'd all have to see it for yourselves.
