After playing The Orange Box's TF2 for a few weeks now, I can see how an online only game could do. At first I didn't like it that much since it was online only and I wasn't too fond of online games, but TF2 was really fun to play. Hopefully, this Valve game will follow suit if it, like Outbreak, has a major online component.

From the Valve games I've played so far, I haven't been disappointed yet...

I really like Portal, I liked the story Half Life 1, 2, 2 Episode 1, 2 Episode 2, and even Counter Strike even though at first I wasn't too fond of CS either.

About 53 seconds into clip I posted is the part that makes me most excited about the game. Had something like that happened in outbreak, we would have been fucked. The closest we got to that was in the Desperate Times scenario at the end, but still no where near the number of zombies nor their speed.

It's running on the Source engine, so I imagine most PCs could run it at some level. If your PC can run The Orange Box, you should be OK.

I've been following this game since it was announced, and I'm glad it's finally got a solid release date. Though knowing Valve, the release date is about three months off.

Anyway, for those who have been asking, the game doesn't have a single player story-based campaign, per se, but it does have a single player mode. It'll be basically the same as the multiplayer, except your three teammates will be controlled by AI. There really isn't a story to speak of, as it's basically, "Zombies have overrun the city. Are you bad enough dude to survive?" That's enough motivation for me.

Kinda disappointed in the pacing. I thought we'd be able to take it slow and methodical, clearing out rooms. This looks like more of an arcade game with the fast movement speed.

I hope they fix the tongue collision issues too. It goes right through the roof and noone can help the guy unless they fall down onto the truck.

It's so blatantly obvious that it will come to PS3 though. Valve have said there isn't a PS3 version in development at the moment. Big deal. It's still going to happen. A deal could just as well already be done between Valve and EA but EA haven't started work, that's all.

Valve hate the PS3... the only way we'll see it hit the PS3 is if EA pulls an Orange Box and does the work themselves. And I dunno if thats really a good idea... there was a lot of issues with the PS3 Orange Box, lock ups and long load times especially. Dunno if the latter especially will translate well to L4D's format...

The combination of the patch download which attempted to fix the continuing freezes I experienced (and still occasionally do) and the 20-ish second loading screens after being killed tend to explain my reasons for my statements, thanks.

In case you aren't reading between the lines, yes I have played it (in fact I own it on PS3). Having played TOB on 360 as well at my friends (which is where I first played it before buying the PS3 version because it's the console I own currently) I clearly noticed the differences I had between my experiences playing on both consoles.

Although I've tried to stay as uninformed as possible on this game so that I get atleast a few surprises when I play through it, has anyone seen the screens of this in the new Game Informer? It was voted most anticipated game of E3 and I couldn't blame them.

The areas included in the article (which I couldn't overlook this time) were farmland and forested areas. Now being in the middle of a corn field with a horde of zombies hauling ass at full speed closing in from all sides is fucking suspenseful as hell. I don't care what anyone says.

The tragedy is that the Biohazard/ResidentEvil series is not getting a Left4Dead treatment with proper coop & multiplayer on a large scale. There hasn't been any word on an Outbreak File 3 for next-gen systems and frankly, they screwed up big time with the Outbreak series. The first game Outbreak File 1 was originally titled Biohazard Online, planned to be something like a Resident Evil MMO, it had 20 or more scenerios but they seriously cut it down in scale, with less than a third of those scenerios making the cut. Biohazard as a franchise is in serious need of rescueing in terms of multiplayer treatment. Hopefully Capcom will see the light and either make a Resident Evil Online or make an Outbreak File 3. It's just sad that Left4Dead is not the game set in the Biohazard universe and it's sad that the Outbreak games are not the Left4Dead game they should be.

XBL and the PSN are really two un-tapped resources for Capcom. They could modify the games to run on both networks and release them as "Resident Evil Online" and have the new scenarios, and then have the older scenarios available later as DLC. But Capcom doesn't want to because Outbreak online was heavily interweaved with SEGA's SNAP architecture and it'd probably be too hard to reprogram the online portion even though they are doing it for RE5 and already have the online experience with a various games like Lost Planet and such...

Well, SNAP stands for Sega Network Application Package which is Sega's online gaming software. Capcom used that for games such as Auto Modelista, Monster Hunter, Outbreak 1 and 2, and probably a few others...

What I like about this game is that you can choose to be either a survivor or be part of the infected group which should be an interesting twist to the gameplay... Hopefully there are still enemies in the game like Boomers and such... Can't say I've seen much on them, then again, I have also deprived myself of content to be surprised by the game...

I'm a little behind on L4D screens and news, but the last I saw of it looked amazing. The animations were pretty jerky and needed a lot of work, but otherwise it looked pretty good, this was a fair while ago i saw those trailers as well.

Also for those that want a singleplayer campaign and characters with some backstory, the game can be played offline, with the CPU A.I taking control of the other survivors (ok.. I know that's not exactly a singleplayer scenario) and it has 3 times more lines than Half Life 2 (8.000 lines of spoken dialog!) (http://kotaku.com/5043897/left-4-dead-to-be-cut-scene-free). Every time the survivors make it to a checkpoint they say something about their past, what happened, how they feel etc. You have to play the game an enormous amount to times to hear all the lines of the survivors.

Yes, that's true. The number 53,594 was chosen because that's the population of the entire town if you pay close attention to the intro. :D The easiest way to get this acheivement involves travelling into the parking garage and killing hundreds of zombies per run using cars/vans available to you in the parking lot.

Playing alone was fun but I got disconnected while playing the demo online. I haven't tinkered with it a whole lot but it seems to randomly join you to a server unless you hook up with friends. The two level demo was a blast. I can't wait till this one is released.

A small update was released that seems to have fixed some game features. I was playing online earlier this evening and the server difficulty must of been set to the max. Me and the three others I was playing with were getting mauled in the subway. I really enjoy how your playing and then all of all sudden your surround by a horde of zombies. Another very nice touch is how item and enemy respawns are random. One play through we were attack by a tank in the subway while on other play throughs witches filled the subway. This game really focuses on teamwork so your pretty much done for if you don't stick with your teammates.

If you're getting tired of the demo, 3rd person mode is a fun way to mix it up.
Just type "sv_cheats 1" then "thirdpersonshoulder" in console. This only works in singleplayer unless the server host has cheats enabled.

Here is a video I recorded. It's on easy mode so it's very tame and the zombies go down instantly.

I just hope it runs adequately on my slightly dated machine... I've got minimum requirements so it should be ok. I don't mind not having perfect framerate provided i can play with my buddies on release day.

I don't think it's better than a capcom game from the looks of it. Characters glide all over stairs and w/e. The zombie horde moves like some cartoon. It looks ridiculous how they all come at you in a neat line, all at the same speed.

Sorry i missed all your invites, but i was setting up the game then playing with some friends.
It runs amazingly well on my dated PC, i'm really suprised - Especially considering i'm actually just below the minimum system requirements for the game. It runs with perfect framerate at 1200x1080 resolution as well as high quality models and 2x antialiasing.... All this and yet TF2 refuses to look good on my machine. I just don't get it!

Left 4 Dead PC will get proper splitscreen support:

Splitscreen was always something we only wanted to officially support on the x360 due to the controller issues. However, we are planning on making some of the functionality work on the PC as an "unsupported" bonus feature. We turned it off for the demo because we didn't want to have to deal with any additional bug reports etc. about it interfering with the demo experience, but the current plan is to re-enable it after we launch the full product.

There are a number of tuning variables, the but tricky thing will be the controller. When testing, the best setup on the PC is to have two joystick/x360 style USB controllers. I think it will also be possible to have one keyboard/mouse and one joystick player.

I haven't looked into supporting two keyboards/mice, as I'm not even sure PC's can deal with that and I doubt we're talking about lots and lots of possible users for such a config.

If you guys want to "finish" the real end of the second level, then type in "noclip", go through the metal door that's locked at the checkpoint, then type in noclip again. Use the "warp" cheat to teleport your other friends with you. There are no enemies, but there are items though.

EDIT: Holy crap. Type this in the console: "bind p z_spawn". Now go to a large area like a subway tunnel or a road and spam the p button. You can keep on spamming zombies as much as you want. The limit is how much your PC can handle. Turn on cheats online, have someone activate that code along with "noclip", then make him spam zombies everywhere while the other three people try to defended themselves. :D

If someone can figure out the codes to summon other enemies, don't hesitate to post them here!

And If it does, Valve will sue the crap out of the company that does it because they've told them "NO" about 5 times.

Valve dislikes the PS3 and the source engine isn't very compatible with it.

The fun and challenge comes in versus mode. Playing as a hunter or a tank makes the game a lot of fun :)

The game shines in Coop mode. If you are playing single player, its not very interesting. Versus is there for the long haul, or to tide you over until they get more campaigns up.

The game is definitely better online. Online, you get people who are trying to kill you, people who are selfish, and people who don't give a damn about you if you get slime'd or hunter'd - lots of unpredictable players. Offline, you only get the AIs, which while are entirely selfless, are incredibly dull to play with.

And I agree with Dot and PO about Versus mode. The game is lots better when actual people are controlling the special zombies/bosses. You'll actually need genuine cooperation between the group if you don't want all three of your teammates pinned down by a smoker/hunter while zombies are chasing you. All the more so if all three of them are down and requiring your assistance to get them back up on their feet, and there's a hunter hot on your heels. :P

I finally earned the Do Not Disturb achievement today. The game was such a bastard with always spawning a witch at an in-passable point for me. Kill a tank single handedly and no ff are really the only attainable ones that are left for me.

I got around to playing a lot more this week and as mention above the game is great online. My only gripe is I still think it is difficult to get a good game started. I like playing with people who communicate and stick with each other. I was playing this morning and it was nothing but a friendly fire match. I played a great game Friday with three others but when we got to the final level of No Mercy on expert we just couldn't finish. Offline I just run through the campaigns on advanced mode with the bots to get a feel for each level.

Oh man, you should get yourself a 3-month card to just play the game with friends on your true acount, it's such an awesome multiplayer experiance; mowing down zombies with your friends and trying to surive. An instant hit from Valve (south).

Once we have RPD mansions and the streets of Raccoon City on L4D, I'm gonna shell out the $3000 I have in New-Gaming-Rig Savings account and build a nice ass system or get a super powerful laptop to wander around in the game...

But for now, I'll just enjoy pouncing on unsuspecting victims as a Hunter. Smoker's suck IMO, and I only liked being the Boomer when I was working on that Vomit-On-All-4-Survivors achievement, but now that I got it, I really prefer to be either the Hunter or Tank. Being the smoker, you have to be high up to be able to survive long enough to do real damage. They can always shoot your tongue to free their friend, and the green smoke is too much of a visual cue of my location say if I was hiding behind a truck waiting to ambush someone.... With the Boomer or Hunter, you can be behind a wall and only you will only be heard, so pinpointing your location is still tricky...

Is it me, or when playing online (versus mode) has the electric generator in the hospital moved to barricade the elevator exit? Playing offline, that's not liked that I wondered if somehow the people we were playing as were able to push that to block the door and keep us pinned while they constantly vomitted on us and tried to choke us with the Smoker's tounge...

What do you mean by short? If by that you mean you were breezing through the levels, then you must have been playing on Easy or something. The real fun is playing on Expert and genuinely cooperating with your teammates in order to stay alive. If by short you mean a lack of levels, then don't worry since once Valve gets around to releasing the SDK for the game you can expect that we're going to get a lot of awesome mods like the one shown above. :D

And if you're wondering, I'm agreeing with Tyrant and aris, it's OK, but I don't think this is anything special at all. Plus, this game is no more replayable than any other co-op campaign. In my eyes, this game is about as replayable as a co-op Gears or Halo 3 campaign.

I'm so happy that my PC could handle with these graphics. I thought it was not going to work, but it did. It's a little bit short, though... but still addictive.

This game is totally different with a nice video card, I'm really impressed at how well it scaled down for slower cards though

Indeed Borman. I play with a Nvidia 7200/7300 and with a resolution of 800X640
and it works fine. It's quite a shame though that I can't put all the configurations up.

Ouch, I played at a bit over 720p at least, with medium settings :P Though Im betting the rest of my computer is a bit better heh

The game got patched yesterday.

Exploits fixed, MAJOR Smoker buffing (hurrah), and a bunch of versus mode changes.

Versus sounds a lot more balanced now... Well on paper (er, text)... I have to actually try the game with the patch.

EDIT: Okay, from what I *heard*, Witches and Tanks in versus apparently spawn in the same location now... Which isn't balanced at all (since second team can anticipate and prepare for it...)
... Again, I have to play versus to see for myself (I don't normally play versus with randoms and over here it's hard to find enough people for a good versus game)

Tell me about it.... I played without dying on the first campaign...
I was playing the second one and died. I started over and was like "Oh, there is a witch over there", but then it just jumped at me from the back..... scared the hell out of me, and made the game look even better at my eyes =P
