Like the title says, wich Silent Hill transformation-pasingtotheotherworld do you like the most?:
- Silent Hill: I don't really know how it was, but after seeing a few videos on youtube, I have a general idea: it was like SH2's otherworld, just that with less graphics (correct me if I'm wrong).
- Silent Hill 2: what I sead above (better graphics than the first one).
- Silent Hill 3: it was a little diferent, I think here is when they started to change it. In some parts the walls would SHINE, like if they were on fire (a strange fire) or something, I didn't like that much, it was confusing. Up to this game, the "otherworld transformation" was introduced EVERY (again, correct me if I'm wrong) time by a video, in wich the character asked himself/hersel what was going on (the first time it hapened, the they would say something like: not againe!).
- Silent Hill 4: NO IDEA HOW IT WORKS OR ANYTHING AT ALL. I just started playing, everything seems from the otherworld, but at the same time it doesn't because it doen't have rust and all, the "red atmosphere" is missing. Maybe its later in the game, I really don't know.
- Silent Hill Origins: here is were things really change: you deside when to enter the otherworld. I thought it was very well done. It transformed the hole game into a puzzle (it allready was, so it transformed it MORE into one); it was fun and the change was for good, but ONLLY if it remained on this game, I don't want other games to use this too. I think the otherworld wasn't anything form the otherworld (hahahahahahaahahahaha); no, really, I though it didn't change that much form the other games, so it was ok.
- Silent Hill Movie: I know its not part of the story, but I must ask if you liked it. I though that... it... was... brilliant!!!!!!!!! they changed an ecential part of the games, and it was great, they were really originals and they just hit the right spot, you could feal the world tearing apart. [if you want you can say: wich otherworls transformations did you like most from the games, and if you liked the world transformation form the movie].
- Silent Hill Homecoming: .................................................. ............... oh! its brilliant!... wait a second! this is a game! not the movie!!!. In the movie it was original and all, but bring it to the game series (just like much other things) isn't that great, I mean, I must admit that it looks fantastic (haven't played the game yet, I hate buying from internet) but I would have loved it to stay on the movies (all the next movies to use that efect) and that the games remained like the others. I really don't care, i't looks fine, and if the story is good, then there woun't be any problems.
My favourite one is in SH2 and SOME parts from SH3; and yes, I like the way they present the otherworld in the movie.
<hey, you guys like this type of threads? if you do, tell me and I'll keep on bringing them, I have plenty of things to say about Silent Hill :P (maybe not a thread like this one, this one was a bit stupid). And I would LOVE to know HOW to make a poll :(.>
Thanks for reading

No, the otherworld in SH1 was nothing like the one in SH2. Otherworld in SH2 was just a dark and dirty version of the real world (SH streets and the hospital), SH1 though was more like SH3, with blood everywhere, disturbing bodies hanged behind bars, huge fans and gratings everywhere (streets of the city, especially later in the game, were all gratings and there were nothing below them - only darkness).

Actually, RE3 had 2 versions of Otherworld. One being like in SH1, where everything was rusty and walls made of mesh and stuff. And the other being like what you see in the hospital, and some rooms at the end, where the walls literally look alive, bleeding, pulsating, etc. Which, I thought was the most gruesome otherworld in any SH game.
But... Which one I liked the most? Probably SH2. I liked the fact that, despite being dirty and gritty, it was still recognizable for what it used to be. I dunno, just something about it that appealed to me the most.
But yeah, that bleeding version in SH3 was by far the scariest.

Yes, does were the parts I liked from SH3.
I'm sorry, I didn't see much SH1 videos, I didn't want to get spoiled, if you say its more darker than SH2's otherworld, I believe you
Biohazard EX
11-24-2008, 11:10 AM
Well, SH1 had simple darkness, which was pretty straighforward. But I wouldn't even call it 'otherworld.' So the actual otherworld in SH1 would be pretty much like the Amusement Park in SH3.

Oh! really? and Mr Zombie calls SH2's otherworld just a dark and dirty version of the real world?? but, now that I think about it, it's not that bad, it's like abandoned and scary, isn't it?
Biohazard EX
11-24-2008, 11:25 AM
Yeah, exactly. I mean... The thing is... In SH2, NORMAL world is usually dark and dirty. So the other world is a darker and dirtier version of THAT world. And it is different. Like, some doors look like they got drapery over them, broken concrete, garbage, etc. It is a lot more creepy than it sounds.
himher_elle
11-24-2008, 11:32 AM
And Sh4? does it go to the otherworld? or the game is already in the other world?
Biohazard EX
11-24-2008, 11:43 AM
Umm... Actually in SH4, it varied, not by the world, but by the room. You're in a normal (still gritty and dirty) world, but then you'll go through a door and you'll be in a room with mesh walls, or bloody, rusty walls. You'll keep going, and you'll be in a room whose architecture which makes no sense at all. It's pretty effective. But there's no black and white toward which world you're in, in SH4.

Oh, I see, thanks. I'll keep playing now SH4, seem like an interesting story.

Adding to the whole dark and gritty SH2 Otherworld... Some places in that game feel like not only are they just horrible places to be... but they don't exist. Like the long staircase to the old prison from the 1800s. And a labyrinth below that. I really doubt that those places still exist (if they ever did), which makes it that much scarier to... Well, I'll spoiler for those who haven't played SH2.
It makes it that much scarier to think that James is so masochistic for what he did to Mary that he more than likely created these evil places from his own need to punish himself. And they are nasty.
That's why SH2's is my favorite. It really makes you wonder if some of the places are even real or not.
Biohazard EX
11-24-2008, 04:16 PM
Well, that's what I meant by architecture that doesn't make sense. There were places like that in SH4, but we all know who's responsible for those, huh?

Hmmmm.
Silent Hill 1's was by far my most scary and disturbing.
Silent Hill 2's was the safest for me, but otherwise pretty spooky.
Silent Hill 3's varies; some bits were dark and disturbing, others not so much. AHH creepy room in the Hospital. *Shivers*
Silent Hill 4...The Room...the spookiest thing about that game was the room itself.
Silent Hill Origins, well I didn't find it scary at all, except the Motels, thats about it.
Silent Hill The Movie is by FAR my favourite transaction, so beautiful.
Silent Hill Homecoming: Have not played and is waiting for release date in UK to play.
My favourite in order:
1, Movie, 2, 3, 4

Ahh, absolutely disturbingly disgusting in a good way!!!
It reminds me of the room is Fatal Frame 2, you go in, its clausophobic, the door locks, and the walls just light with Japanese symbols with a box slightly open. Fucking scary shit. >_<
Excuse my langauge.
Anyways, about Silent Hill 4: The Room...Im phasmophobic, so I can't even play the game.
Yes I scream everytime I see a ghost on FF, but atleast THEY FUCKING DIE.
Weres SH4's ghosts cant die, and later you're not even safe, so, I can't play it, its too scary.
Biohazard EX

What's Phasmophobic?
It sucks that you can't play it, but honestly... I'd love to play a game that scared me that much.

Phobia against ghosts or paranormal activity.
Fatal Frame is bad enough, but ghosts that dont die, AND THEM COMING WHEN YOU'RE SUPPOSED TO BE IN THE SAFE ROOM.
I'd rather not complete it then go through that torture, I have to admit, Ive never had a game so scary I dont want to play it.
And the fact that hauntings happen, Im afraid to even admit ghosts are most likely real; if I saw a ghost I would most likely faint on the dot, the idea scares me and if I think about it too much, I get paranoid a ghost might be around me and I suddenly go cold and start to get afraid.
MINI EDIT: I can't even play a ghost game on my own.

Yes, who can forget the mirror room in SH3? Haha.
That was great! I felt like SH3 was a game that didn't like the player, you see this in: the mirror room; when you are in the shopping and you try to see wats in a toilet, and shes about to do it, but doesn't, and says something like: "thats grose! who could even think abaut doing that!" and she looks directlly to the screen, like making fun of you; then there are does rooms wich have monsters and nothing more, that was weird for me, I tend to explore EVERYTHING in games, and having to kill/avoid them was pretty anoying
Biohazard EX
11-24-2008, 08:55 PM
Well, she looks at you because in SH2, if you choose to do so, James DOES reach into the toilet and take out a wallet. So she's half making fun of James. But since you're the one who controls James, she is in a way making fun of you.
I think there was a more vague reference about it in SH4. Something like, "A toilet. I'm not going to reach in there." Or something of the sort. No special cutscene for it, but still.

The first Silent Hill had the best otherworld. Everything was there for a reason, and everything had significance in relation to Alyssa, be it where you were in the town, the enemies you had to fight, the items you collected and the state of the environment.
It also had an atmosphere that no other Silent Hill game has properly been able to recreate, which I believe Siren Blood Curse does very well. Perhaps it's the Toyama touch? Who knows?
The otherworld of Silent Hill 3 was also pretty fantastic, a lot of nice pieces here and there, but I always felt that it dragged on too long and became uncomfortable to play. As for Silent Hill 4, there was no real otherworld, and Silent Hill 2 was much the same, it was only really darkness. Anything that could be considered "Otherworld" was all in James' head, as in the real hotel, the prison and such.

You broke Randomwab? Cool.
When the debirs settle I say we go see who else we can make self destruct.
I personally like the first Otherworld, since it was essentially a physical manfiestation of the shattered physche of a tortured woman and that's a powerful thing to visualize. Especially Nowhere at the end.

I'm going with SH1 overall as well myself, although SH3 has my fav transformation ever in it.
The one where you go into the room with the camera facing the mirror, and the mirror world gets taken over and Heather, and then eventually it crawls through the mirror and if you stay in the room after that it begins slowly killing you. It's really awesome.

Toss up between SH1 and SH3. Silent Hill 1 had overall the best "Otherworld" in the series that was so unique in design that it made the game all the more scarier. The environment scared the shit out of me alot more than the enemies ever did. Rusted, bloodied mesh with nothing but darkness behind them, disembered bodies randomly strewn and so on.
SH3's other world was like this, only far more detailed and elaborate, and dare I say "alive". What with the pulsating walls and such. The final section of the game serves as a great testament to atmosphere.

I just had a revelation about the SH2 Otherworld that makes me think it's the best even more. We were talking about how the architecture could be part of James' imagination, right? Well...
The prison/labyrinth/graveyard/freezer can't exist, at least not with the rules of reality. To prove my point:
You go into the historical society and down the staircase into the prison. You go through to the labyrinth, the graveyard, the freezer in James' grave (which makes no sense in itself). James is thought to be hundreds of feet underground now. Yet when you exit the freezer after the events that take place (won't spoil), you're maybe a story down at the historical society's back door. From hundreds of feet in two giant areas to the back door of a building the size of a normal house? That only strengthens the fact.
Btw, did anyone else realize that it changes from Dark Silent Hill (not Otherworld) to Foggy Silent Hill? When you enter it's dark, and when you exit it's foggy. :P

I've only played Silent Hill 2 but I've seen the movie and if I had to say, I liked the movie's a little more. You could feel that something horrible was happening in it, while in SH2 you just exited a room(?) and everything was dark. Don't get me wrong, though, I loved SH2's otherworld. Like Canas said, everything seems to change to subtly punish James for what he did and that was awesome. It's just that SHM has that sense of panic from seeing everything breakdown.
Biohazard EX
11-26-2008, 12:04 AM
Yeah, but it wasn't just darker. There was this weird drapery over the doors. Everything looked very different. Just not mesh different.
See, the way I see it is, in SH1/3, the dark world looks like something out of hell. Something that's been burned, rusting the metal. Etc.
With SH2, it's the other way around, it's like the whole place has been drenched in water to the point where the wood started to rot and things start falling apart.
Twist
11-26-2008, 04:56 AM
My favorite SH Otherworld would be my own version, truth be told:
The most unforgiving, gritty, disturbing, tormenting, horrific, dark, moody, intimidating, yet beautiful place I would name "Gehenna". Gehenna is a place from the holy bible. Not a nice place at all.
Biohazard EX
11-26-2008, 05:04 AM
But... It wasn't in any Silent Hill game either... So It's technically not an SH otherworld.
Twist
11-26-2008, 05:40 AM
Thats because it's my own version, heh.
But as for real SH Otherworlds, I'd go with which ever was the most horrfic/gritty.

I had a dream about SH that I keep forgetting to tell everyone about. XD That Otherworld transformation was really sweet. So Heather and I go down this ladder to a concrete hall and all of a sudden the ceiling starts melting. As it drips to the floor, where the droplets hit you can see the Otherworld. The walls started melting away into the Otherworld too... It took about a minute, but then the Otherworld had completely revealed itself.
Scared the pants off me. :P

I liked the otherworld in Origins, just because of the pure concept of it. Kinda that through the looking glass Alice in Wonderland kinda thing going on. I found it was very elaborate.
himher_elle
11-27-2008, 09:25 AM
The thing with Origin's otherworld was that you didn't feel like: "Oh god! I'm in the otherworld, it's a nightmare that I can't go out of!!!"; insted you had the mirrors and could go in and out whenever you wanted, as I sead before, it was cool and fun to play with that factor, but the otherworld didn't have the fear factor of: "oh!, I'm in another dimension, it's al f**** up, and I don't know for how long I'll be here!!!"
Biohazard EX
11-27-2008, 10:45 AM
Yeah, but it's not like the normal world is unscary in Silent Hill. It's not exactly sunshine and flowers. To be honest, when I was first playing the Sanitarium, the normal side of it, I found to be so gritty and creepy, that when I found the first mirror, I was like, "Finally, back to the normal world..." I completely forgot that I was even IN the normal world, and when I went through the mirror to the otherworld, it was THAT MUCH CREEPIER, and I was like, "Feck!"
Dot50Cal
11-28-2008, 09:58 PM
Silent Hill 1 had that really great charm to its otherworld. Though, correct me if I'm wrong here, wasn't there basically 3 "phases"?
1. Normal World
2. White World (ash falling)
3. Other World (rape dungeons!)
Maybe I'm mis-remembering. But anyway, at the time, the game looked great and as odd as it might sound, the frame rate helped make the game world seem more frantic and crazy.
Biohazard EX
11-28-2008, 10:12 PM
Yeah, there's no normal world in SH1. I mean, the normal world is the one with... Well, it's not ash, it's actually snow that's falling. They mention it in the game.
But umm... If you want to consider the darkness one of the worlds, then yes. Basically, there's normal world, which is mist and snow falling, there's the darkness, which is like the normal world, but dark, (which it turns to in an instant), and there's the, yes, rape dungeon. Three that way. But there's no reason between the normal world and the darkness in terms of the architecture or anything.
Still, the most distinct difference is in SH3, where there's the normal world, the rusty darkness world, and the pulsating bloody world.
Prime Vampire
12-26-2008, 02:31 PM
to tell the truth, I liked the "normal" dimension the most, since it was the most disturbing for me... I'm not afraid of some rust and spikes and cages like in the Perverted ones, but the grey reality of Silent Hill... Those falls in the ground, appearing from nowhere, the people, that you don't know if they are existing or not... And the most - the silence... I often turn on some music from Winamp while playing there, because it's really fearfull, walking in the quiet town... And of course, looking at your own dead bodies all over the town in the SH2 makes you uneasy...
The Ekamp

I vote, SH2, since it's different from the ones in SH1 and 3. It goes from dark, creep shit to REALLY dark and creepy. Looking at the hospital, with all the dirty plastic thrown over everything (as if it's under quarantine), and then there was all the cloth over buildings after that (and I'm confused if that was even the "nightmare" side, or it was just in eclipse mode...)
Tho I gotta do some nerdy clearing up; technically, the WHOLE of the games take place in the Otherworld, that is, both the foggy and the nightmare sides are in the same realm. Like a coin. Apparently, in the first game, the transitions are based on Allessa's dream cycles (something to do with rapid eye movement) And I'm confusing myself >_<
