Yo!
As I try to squeeze in time here and there to do some random tweaks and updates to things here and there on my spare time, I would like to just point out that we have a little thing here on THIA that people surely must've noticed, but probably not really put too much thought into!
You might have noticed how some users have things like these;
http://www.the-horror.com/forums/images/ranks/staff-bioflames.pnghttp://www.the-horror.com/forums/images/ranks/staff-pu.pnghttp://www.the-horror.com/forums/images/ranks/staff-refan.pnghttp://www.the-horror.com/forums/images/ranks/staff-bh.pnghttp://www.the-horror.com/forums/images/ranks/staff-recenter.pnghttp://www.the-horror.com/forums/images/ranks/staff-rebetade.pnghttp://www.the-horror.com/forums/images/ranks/staff-rebde.png
These mean they're staff members from other sites, representing their respective communities/sites/legacy (duh! Self-explanatory!)
Anyway, I'd like to point out that anyone who actually runs a Resident Evil or otherwise Survival Horror-themed website can have one of these on their profile (and also tell us who's part of their staff so we may add them, if desirable), so it appears every single time you make a post. All that's really required is that your site isn't just some no-name freehosting/110mb/ezboard thing, but actually a site that you have a proper domain for, have kept online for a while, and all that.
The design you roughly need to follow can be seen up above. I'm not sure if I'll ever make them clickable, not because I don't want your precious sites to get clicks/views, but mostly because I fear the anger and frustration of accidental clicks + the feeling of them being "ads", rather than just a signature-ish thing.
You can PM me your logo-design if you want this. Just make sure it's in PNG and follows roughly the same type of design as seen in the samples up above (and don't forget the transparency!). Additionally, you may ask for help/info or just post/ask about relevant stuff her.
I'm gonna try to see if I can fix the sorting thing sometime, since some of the posting ranks (+ranks for having been a donor or done stuff like witnessing the boulder incident) incorrectly lists itself before the site staff indicator... creating a minor layout issue.

How do you get THIA one?
Carnivol

The THIA one is basically used by the main THIA staff.
Had anything in mind? Like us adding one for regular/senior forum members or something like that?

I guess it would be cool if there were some way to recognize senior members...other than the silly little images under the avatar signifying post count. Like, I don't know, a ribbon system or something? That's lame, I know, but I bet we could come up with something.

Isn't that what custom tags are for?

Are we still gonna do the mod staff logo? I know that Dot50Cal was looking into that and into putting us on the staff page before he went on hiatus. I quite liked the idea of an R.P.D logo.

NO! CUSTOM TAGS JUST ARNT ENOUGH!

My personal opinion is that if we start making tags for non-staff, it could become troublesome. For a start, there'll be the issue of who is classed as a "senior forum member" and who isn't, and anyone who hasn't been put into that category would probably be offended. I think it's better to leave site tags to site staff only, but that should include all staff (including forum staff), and we should follow on with the ideas we touched upon before Dot50Cal went away.
There's also the fact that if we start giving tags out to forum posters, then eventually most people here will have one and the idea of the special "site staff" tags having meaning behind it (that you're a contributor to a site in the RE community) sort of vanishes.
The idea of being a respected member on the site is shown with the custom tags and it's more or less easy to see if you're a "senior member" based on your join date and post count, and also quality of posts.

SNIP.
Pretty much this. Besides...there's also the B4 Lab where senior/trusted/whatever members are allowed to post. If you wanted to do something for other members that have been here a while, why not give them the ability to change their own title? That way when someone decides their flavor of the month needs to change they dont have to PM the admins about it.

I like this. I'd prefer not to bug Carn about changing my custom title every so often.

Really? A secret sub forum? Cool name by the way.

I think the idea of "senior" forum users being able to edit their own custom tag is a better idea than making staff badges for regular users. As I said before, that's opening a can of worms. And yeah, there is a secret sub forum but it's very rarely used. It was created during the huge influx of Jill discussion pre-RE5 for people who wanted to discuss non-Jill related stuff and it boomed for a bit, then it died out and it's not uncommon to go for months with not one new post in it. Not really much point for it anymore to be honest.

Agreed with the above posters...being able to edit custom tags would be nice, instead of having to bother Carn or Dot. Is there a way to limit the ability to do so to certain members instead of giving it to everybody?

Yeah I'm with CR29. It be better if only senior members get the make your own custom title option. Or else it'd be a rainbow fest with everyone having custom titles.
Just sayin'.

RE: Mod badges - I can fix those... if I just stop being lazy  (It's a quick fix, actually)
RE: Custom tags - That's pretty much what's been used for notable/senior members so far. It works fine. I probably can activate them and add a second usergroup for them that I add people to if they somehow "qualify" for it, but I seem to recall non-admin made tags not being able to use colors or other forms for code (forum security reasons)
(Also, I really need to figure out that sorting thing for the usergroup tags... that thing is really annoying me )

witnessing the boulder incident
What's that exactly? I've always wondered about it.
That was a live stream event where Dot was playing RE1 (the original) and got killed by a really bizarre glitch at one of the rolling boulders. All the people who witnessed it live got that tag.
here's the incident : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aK9orKjxLHs

Well, they won't because Carnivol said in the OP that it can't just be any website. It has to have a domain name, decent amount of members and to have been up for quite some time, etc.
And yeah, the boulder incident was funny. People without custom tags got a browny custom tag saying they're a "Boulder incident witness" with a little dead Jill icon next to their pic, and people already with custom tags just got the dead Jill icon, like next to my name.

I'll have to dig out some some nice STARS and RPD logos or something this weekend.
I'll find something so I can wrap up those moderator icons 'n' stuff. (I'm gonna see if I can get a hover-over text to work with them too, so people can better see what the icons are for. We have internal system descriptions for everything, hopefully we can get those to show externally too.)

Still trying to figure out why the usergroups icon thingy doesn't want to organize itself in a proper order...
Anyway, regarding the custom tags, the same as I said before still stands;

So many pictures and so much clutter. Wouldnt it be practical to either resize them or throw the whole site affiliation function into ones profile?
Carnivol
06-14-2010, 09:26 AM
The site affiliation thingy stays. Basically, the 5 things would be "User ID, Tag, Ranks, Site and Avatar). Might look into a redesign of it, though (or see if we can use a different function to trigger it or change the layout.) Alternative design ideas would just to make it two blocks wide instead of 2x2. Anyway, if anyone feels they're bothersome, you could always just block the images/ranks directory in your browser
Ideally, it (the site tag) should appear on a line of its own (as it nicely does on my profile at the moment), while all other so called "ranks" (post count, admin status, event participant, etc.) should be on a line of its own (which they don't on mine, as post rank is on the bottom).
It's just that there's a slight (illogical?) issue concerning how vbulletin handles the display order of them (only recurring pattern I can find is that at least post rank will ALWAYS be displayed last.) Guess I'll have to get Dot50Cal to drop a post on the vbulletin support board (since the license is in his name, iirc) and see if anyone there knows ('cause, really, I see no external pattern... file name, dates, formats, numerical order, etc... all seem to be irrelevant)
Alexia's list is probably the one that irks me the most. I have no clue why it does that. I can enable a linebreak for the mod icon, but then it'll of course create one new line on all profiles with mod status (even those that look perfectly fine, such as mine and Darkmoon's)
Since the blue badge represents moderator, shouldn't yours be different carn considering you are a admin.
Carnivol
06-14-2010, 11:33 AM
Well, the plan was to do an RPD Officer's badge for mods and S.T.A.R.S. for Admins.
But I got a bit lazy and didn't throw together the S.T.A.R.S. one when I quickly did the RPD badge... It kinda just pops up on me 'cause I'm both part of the admin and moderator user groups (I could of course just unflag myself from moderators.)

Okay. Seems like I've figured out what it is that makes the order of appearance system tick, but gonna check something with Dot50Cal first before I evt. start restructuring it in any way.
(Just temporarily fixed Alexia's order of appearance manually as a test)
If anyone has any feedback on how they think the order should be; Shoot!
Currently, it's Username -> Tag -> Ranks -> Site -> Postcount Rank > Avatar -> Join Date -> Location -> Posts -> Online Status. I was at least thinking of maybe shuffling to Online Status -> Username -> Tag -> Ranks -> Postcount rank -> Site -> Avatar -> Join -> Location -> Posts. Or atleast get Postcount rank up above Site, if not moving the Online status... or maybe I should do Username -> Tag -> Site -> Ranks -> Postcount rank -> etc.

I've always wanted the online status to be at the top rather than the bottom so you don't have to scroll down to see. Cool beans.

I like it where it is. If you click the "last post" button it always takes you to the bottom of the page anyway, so if that was changed around, I'd have to scroll all the way up.

I guess that's true about the LP button.
Question...what the hell is that thing next to the stars logo? I used to think it was some RE creature too small to make out, but now that I really look at it, it appears to be an upside down man with a gun?

Its Jill dead. People who watched Dot play RE1 and saw him get hit by a boulder. People who didn't have custom tags got one that said "Boulder Incident Witness" and that little picture of Jill dead underneath it.

Yeah, basically there was a time where Dot50Cal did various RE1 playthroughs in a bid to discover all the secrets in the game, and in one of them, there seemed to be a bug where he was stood back but somehow when the boulder rolled passed, he still got killed and everyone was like ... WHAT?!.. and it was therefore called the "Boulder incident". People with custom tags got the photo and others got the photo and the "Boulder Incident Witness" custom tag.
