It doesn't seem so. Notice that one of the stages is the Shan Tsung room with the old Shang Tsung himself siting on a throne.
It rather looks like something between MK2 and MK4.

EDIT: On the other hand, there's Kira imprisoned in one of the backgrounds. She's from MK: Deception, so... maybe it is a sequel to that game.

Ok, now I'm interested. I love MK and I'm glad to see that the franchise didn't die with midway, so far it looks good. And the movie project also seems quite good (which is odd, I usualy don't like when people take many liberties when developing a movie based from a game).

True to form, the combat looks a lot faster and more fluid, like the older games. Even the levels they showed us, the living forest, the pit and Shao Khans throne (complete with Sonya Blade in chains) are based off the originals, with a new coat of paint.

The game looks really good actually, and everyone has custom animations. There’s a real focus on the characters here.

Which smoke? His human form or his cyborg form? I actually prefer his cyborg form myself. I actually didn't know up until a few minutes ago on the MK wiki that Sektor is pretty much the only evil cyborg ninja. I guess Mustard (Cyrax) and Smoke are trying to find their humanity/memory.

At the moment, at least, Smoke is Noob Saibot's slave after Noob found Smoke. Which is ironic, since Noob was the origional MK1 Sub Zero and Smoke's friend. Sub-Zero the Current may or may not be able to restore there memories, but it's likely he captured them during Armageddon.

I don't care too much about who all the characters are, as long as all of MK1's characters are there. Anyone else is just gravy. Jax, Cyrax and Baraka would be nice.

A leaked screen grab from the character selection for the forthcoming Mortal Kombat reboot, show that the roster of fighters will be 26-strong, with 8 readily available and a further 18 to unlock.

The image, snapped by German games site Play Front shows the first eight characters to be Mortal Kombat stalwarts Scorpion, Sub-Zero, Johnny Cage, Kung Lao, Reptile, Mileena, Night Wolf and red cyborg, Sektor.

That's obviously not all though, as there are another 18 slots, which we expect to see filled by other MK mainstays like Kano, Sonya Blade, Shang Tsung, Raiden, Jax and Liu Kang. We'd be very surprised if they'd been axed for the new Mortal Kombat.

And there's also plans for downloadable fighters, as the 'DLC' slot in the bottom right corner of the selection panel clearly shows.

Those 8 fighters are just the fighters in the e3 demo. I'm guessing something more like 16 fighters available at the start and 10 unlockable fighters.

HEY! Kabal is kool (see what I did thar?) but Stryker I could get a fuck about, I've never liked him. As for the knock off Scorpion,Reptile and Sub-Zero such as Noob, Rain (who doesn't like purple rain?) and Ermac I like them when they had their own move set but if its another copy that's shit.

I'm thinking Smoke will have his 2 forms as a ninja and a cyborg.

I am anxiously awaiting this game as well. Personal favorites are Scorpion, Sub-Zero, Kitana and Mileena. The latter two are just cool because they have ballistics, and they kick ass. It's great that it's going back to the roots of brutality.

I"m actually expecting them to use the entire character roster from MK-MK3. There's like 26 characters or so (special characters included) which means another 20 slots on the selection screen are available. But who knows?

So far it appears there may indeed be 3 fatalities per character.
Sub Zero seems to have 3 anyways.

Yeah I just read about the Krato's thing. I can live without him being in the game but meh, oh well its still a cool DLC thing I guess. I doubt I'll ever use him.

The voice leaks I checked out yesterday I believe and Sektor was supposed to be in there I think but its human Sektor not cyborg. Not entirely sure though cause I was busy when listening to the voices and looking at the list of names. Either way we'll find out eventually. I can't wait for this damn game.

Reptile was always one of my favorites until they made him more like a lizard with every entry, there's just something about the old school ninja attire that gets my proverbial juices flowing. I hope they have human smoke as well.

Reptile's been my favorite character since the second one. His presence in MK1 is so cool though, he's this enigmatic higher-level (judging by his use of both SZ and Scorp's moves) ninja that you can only fight by meeting all of these specific requirements.

I'll hit up amazon in late January when I'm back from India. Gamestop's getting my preorder for Marvel vs. Capcom 3 so I'll just go a bit easier on my wallet with this one.

Sounds like they've indeed crammed the entire cast from MK1-3 and put them in the game...and then some, because Quan CHi from MK4 has a sound byte on the official MK website someone ripped.

That fightstick looks like a waste.

The regular style of button layout like with the Street Fighter IV TE sticks suits so many fighters, buying that sets you up for pretty much any fighter that releases, be it SF 2x3, SNK 1x4, Tekken 2x2 with an extra for start, Soul Caliburs L shape, jap styles, western styles etc etc.

For anything but MK that stick is awful and likely unuseable. Why not just go with industry standard.

Great to see a lot of Reptile support in here, he's my favourite too but for the most retarded of reasons. Green is my favourite colour. However, he has actually grown on me for more than just that reason, his character's pretty decent too. Plus being able to spit acid on people is epic on a xenomorph level.

To be honest, an MK game without Liu Kang (in any form) is a refreshing change of pace. That's pretty much why I liked Deadly Alliance better than Armageddon and Deception.

As to the Kratos issue, my only problem with it is how ridiculously more powerful Kratos would be than all the other characters canonicly. Obviously that won't translate into gameplay, but still. Regardless, I don't see how his inclusion hurts anyone's game or should influence their decision of whether or not to but it.

Her backstory of being the same race as Baraka is pretty cool. You figured when she has her mask on she is pretty much the same thing as Kitana.

Hell she wasn't even supposed to have those teeth. Ed decided to throw them in there. The teeth were just there for her fatality.

Both Mortal Kombat movies (the first one and Annihilation) are going to be released on Blu-Ray on April 19th (same day as MK9) and the first MK is going to have a code for Klassic Jade outfit.

I'll pick up the first MK movie since I like it. I refuse to watch the failed abortion that was Annihilation.

I'm just hoping this one has a little bit of in game story. I didn't like Armagedon because it felt like they'd forgotten to add any kinda story for most of the characters. It's not much, but I like the little bios and a decent ending sequence.

I bought MK unchained at 10 bucks out of curiosity, and hell, what is this game? It seems to be all about silly stances, combos and walking around your ennemy... Actually I haven't even figured out to grapple or freeze an ennemy, if it's even possible...

What kind of lame gameplay, seriously. It doesn't feel like MK at all, when you look at the brutal and fast gameplay of UMK3 in comparison.

I'm glad they're going back to the roots with this new Mortal Kombat.
