View Full Version : 15 years of Resident Evil (here's to 15 more!)

Has it been that long already? Yup!

Today marks the 15th Anniversary of the release of the original Resident Evil on the PlayStation! Amazing, isn't it? I'm pretty sure we've actually got forum regulars who're younger.

So where are we now - 15 years later?

Here's a "top of my head" list of what's at least on the horizon;

We've got not just one, but TWO films coming out;
-Resident Evil - Damnation, which is a CG movie set in the game universe and thus likely to be just as canon as the previous CG movie.
-Resident Evil 5, which will be the fifth movie in the movie franchise. Scheduled for a late 2012 release. Not sure if this has a proper name yet.

We've also got a fistful of games and rumored games coming out (pardon me if I'm forgetting anything special or a billion mobile productions);
-Resident Evil - Mercenaries 3D, which is a handheld "mercenaries mode"-only for the new 3DS. Features both new and old stages and characters.
-Resident Evil - Revelations, which is a handheld (again, 3DS), story-driven game set somewhere before the events of Resident Evil 5.
-Resident Evil - Portable, which is ... uhm ... who knows. Originally announced for the PSP and then just went radio silent. Maybe it's moved to the NGP? Very old rumors suggested an Outbreak-ish game for the PSP.
-Resident Evil - *something something*, which is, well, a title only rumored to be in development by none other than one of the SOCOM devs. If all rumors are to believed, it might be an Outbreak-ish affair. Could this and portable be one and the same? Either way, listing this since after the Dead Rising / Blue Castle rumor thing turned out to be very much true ... I'll honestly believe anything as long as Capcom's name is associated with it.
-Resident Evil 6, which is not even announced, but... hey... we all know it'll happen. It's just a matter of WHEN!

Community wise, what's going on these days?

The chaps over on Project Umbrella (http://projectumbrella.net/) are ever so busy with their research. Churning away at any piece of research and story content they can find, in order to piece together the most extensive wiki-presentation of what's what, who's who and the like for the Resident Evil universe.

The people of the Resident Evil Center (http://www.residentevilcenter.net/) continue to amaze me with their efforts and I love their burning passion.

I'm not sure what's going on the other sites and communities around the globe, such as REfan, BHF and Biohaze, but I'm hoping everyone's doing great and celebrating this 15th Anniversary with style. At least I couldn't help but notice that Yama and cvxfreak is at least marking the occasion with once again whipping up a pretty impressive thread over on NeoGAF (http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=424998).

And I guess we shouldn't forget about Jerome's hard work on the Patient Zero movie project (http://refanfilms.com/). They've got a total of 6 Behind the Scenes sequences up now, and recently announced that the release has been pushed into September. If you're on Facebook, I strongly suggest that you help spread the love for their hard efforts at Resident Evil Fan Films by liking their Facebook page (http://www.facebook.com/refanfilms) :)

Now, where were we?

As you probably could guess based on the sloppiness of this post... we sadly didn't really get a chance to properly whip anything special together for this occasion, but here's where the site stands at the moment; Our moderators are doing a fantastic job keeping an eye on things, I'm trying to pretend I have a social life (whilst at least attempting to maintain contact with people and keep track of their whereabouts), Dot50Cal's in the middle of relocating again (hopefully for the last time this time) and everyone is very much looking forward to getting whipped back in action by him.

Hopefully, once we're well into April, we can get a few of our rather shamefully delayed releases and projects whipped off the ground again and start properly updating things around here again. (And, yes, I know we've probably been saying that for a while now). And, uh, speaking of releases... this (http://www.hidden-palace.org/) certainly seems attention worthy too. Right?

Happy birthday, Resident Evil! :)

PS: Sorry about the lack of a Jill Sandwich -> Jill Pie -> Cream pie competition. You're free to post pictures of your delicious cakes and pastries if you'd like, and I'll see if I can dig out something to reward you with for efforts (as if being encouraged to eat cake/pastries wasn't reward enough). No guarantees, but it'd probably have to be something unRElated. Sorry.

Happy Birthday RE! A bit sappy there Carnivol though. My post would go something like this...

How the RE Community has failed

- RE 1.5 still not publicly released.
- Capcom do not listen to its hardcore fans (evidence - RE5 and upcoming games). Hence awful state of series..
- Still disorganised, we don't even know what REfan is doing! (according to Carnivol :))

OK maybe I'm not involved much anymore to comment but what the hell..

Project Umbrella is great for covering the current RE canon. And you were right to include Jerome's projects, it's not enough for 15 years however. There needs to be more RE projects but we're not that sort of community whom are exceptionally skilled in coding and stuff. Timing and resources does not permit much action in this area - hopefully it can change in the future somehow. For example, if someone could create an engine similar to RE3/RECV and create some decent games for it we would have something very similar to old-school RE and could start doing our own canon or whatever we wanted (alt-timelines perhaps? :)). And no need to wait for Dark Biohazard or whatever. Let's face it, the current RE games are really crappy right now.

This being said, i strongly agree with scream's last words

the current RE games are really crappy right nowwhether one's disagree or not, for me the series turned to shit with RE4. Most of the succession from there have been irrelevant to my interest. I enjoyed some of the spin of titles like; Outbreak , UC & Darkside.. but that's about it. 4&5 killed everything i loved in the franchise. The new entries doesn't raise anything close to anticipation in me & from the look of the overall decisions made in the past decade...it looks like i will be biting my nails for a long time for ''anything (solid) yet to be unveiled set in the old school's viral universe'' ;(

Happy Birthday Resident Evil ^_^

Let me make an advice to this point on.

As for Resident Evil Portable OR anything that is a spin off to outbreak it is confirmed as a rumor it will never happen why because its obvious they are more focused to the other Resident Evil Titles

1. Resident Evil: Revelations.

2. Resident Evil: Mercenaries 3D.

3. Resident Evil 6.

4. Resident Evil Damnation. " CGI Movie "

That is all reason why I said because I do alot more research then anyone else as far as I do remember reading back in those months to a year ago.

So please do not look for false info that maybe a rumor because those psp rumors aren't coming true and we all know that.

Actually maybe a Rage but its even doubtful they'll even put it out I mean come on....The title's of what we see coming out this years seems to be the only thing they are focused on.

Its obvious I like this idea of them not thinking about Portable, or another outbreak...this is what they need to do is to move on from outbreak and portable.

Portal is a life of being hard without a portable version makes life much easier than what we all have to deal with.

We used simple tools for the cake (spoon , butter knife , toothpick etc..)
We had no fancy tools & no past experience in B-Day cake & icing color mixtures, so it was trial & error ; one drop of this & that.. repeating the process to get as close as possible color result ! took about an hour & half including baking in pyrex 2.8l ! Ended up better than i expected. we will make others as it's low cost 7$ and quite fun to make.here's most of what we used & what's left of it as we speak

HAPPY BIRTHDAY ~ Thanks to all the staff at THIA, PU, BIOHAZE, & ReCenter, all of whom seem more aware of today's significance than Capcom. There have been highs {Remake} and lows {as highlighted in Scream's insightful post on page 1} There are many potentially good developments on the horizon, and I am confident that Biohazard 6 will bring the series back to its origins, as so beautifully realised in Remake.
I can still remember the opening musical score when I entered RPD's main entrance hall for the first time, like it was yesterday....Capcom will do well to match the atmospheric heights of Biohazard 2, but it is possible if they reign in the mindless violence, with a focus back to survival horror.

I feel that I must remind everyone, hacking/modifying RE/BH games isn't exactly what I would call "simple". All file formats are custom, unlike *game title* that exists within *game community*.

Not to mention, hardly anyone in this community cares, anymore - they'd much rather spend countless hours "shooting everything in sight" *cough* new RE/BH games *cough*, as if they were zombies, themselves.

For those asking, in regards to REFan... if you visit the website you'll see what we're doing, or what we're not to be exact. There is no more information (mostly outdated) on the site anymore, and Roody has left the forum there for those who still visit. In short, I've finished running a website on the series after around 13 years of doing so.

I'd orignally planned a post celebrating the 15 years and discussing the operation of website but I wasn't entirely sure. And then Roody seems to have just gone ahead on the forum thing early anyway of his own chosing, so yeah... thats it.

Thanks to everyone who supported the site for all the years it was around and myself through various sites, it's a shame it finished with such a wimper but it's time for me to move on from it.

If anyone wants me for future items or discussion on the series, I'm still around and I'm happy to write for people where they may want... just shoot me a message or an e-mail or something.

Hey Rombie, I loved REfan way back when I visited everyday sometime in the early 2000s and even New-Blood before you guys merged.

I just loved the website's layout and media, with all the gameplay videos, intros/endings/cutscenes & AMVs. =D

Resitez.com used to be the affiliates website from where I got to any of the RE fan community based sites.
I just checked (after many years) and it just redirects to your REFan site. xD

Then, why don't you try to do something better, yourself? - _-

As i've said before, some file formats are pretty tough to decipher, not to mention there's hardly anyone interested in BH/RE modification.

Touchy much, are we?

What little I've poked around on the early REs myself (and what little I've bothered to check up with others who're a tad bit more seasoned than myself) indicates that pretty much everything in terms of PS1 era Resident Evil is mostly just a simple mixture of plain formats and out-of-the-box stock formats. Only thing really tricky at first sight is how at least the console versions get all butt hurt when certain types of data is altered, but at least the Spanish and Portuguese fan-translation teams seems to've quickly worked their way around those (I'd say possibly by either manually tracing the madness or comparing things to the Russian bootleg translations)

It's not like this is a FF community with a trillion members who have no lives outside of their fantasy-rpg worlds. :rollseyes

This so called "FF community" is (to my knowledge, anyway) mainly limited to a gazillion Final Fantasy VI/III hacks (mainly thanks to a mixture of a set of flexible tools people have made in the past, based on reverse engineering and understanding of the game, and incredibly well written documentation that makes it a cakewalk for even a beginners to achieve some decent stuff), a set of "enhancement" and "compatibility" hacks for the PC version of VII (and some translations on the PS1 version, iirc.), some old Final Fantasy Tactics stuff, a good set of translation projects spread out on a multitude of languages and across titles on various platforms (of which some are fairly simple stuff and others downright malevolent) and a couple of mention worthy TCs (such as Dragoon X Omega II).

Of course, going to the point of labeling them all the "FF community" and a bunch of "no life" is being plain ignorant and what I'd dare to call pretty insulting, especially considering how well most of the technically adept ones document their work, share their knowledge and interact with members of various communities (u jelly?). So they're not worthy of any kind of praise? I'd say these supposed "no life" are probably no different on the "no life"-o-meter from most people you see around these parts.

@Rombie - ...sad to read about REFan. Best of luck with future endeavors! :):)

Apparently, you've only 'poked around' with BioHazard 1 / Resident Evil 1, for the PSone. Yes, most of the files are pretty common, but from BioHazard 2 / Resident Evil 2 forward, most files are proprietary and cannot be easily reverse engineered. Not to mention that crazy little thing called "file compression", which in CAPCOM's case, usually tends to be proprietary, as well.

And for the record, text translation happens to be the easiest modification for the PSone Classic versions. If *person* knows how to use a hex editor and a texture creator, *person* can make a language translation.

...You talk big about this kinda stuff an some-what 'diss the BH/RE community, yet, you don't really take any action to better the situation (like, trying to reverse engineer, write apps, documentation, etc).

...yeah, because writing pages upon pages of file format documentation and completely reverse engineering PC video games isn't the slightest bit of time-consuming. :rollseyes It's taken most communites many years to get where thery're at, not mention, most member counts are insanely large and their member actually care about modification.

I just used the FF community as a reference. I could have just as easily referred WoW junkies, but that'd be too easy. Harsh/Insulting? Yes? True? Maybe, I don't know for sure - I have a life outside of the internet/pc/cellphone, but I do know what i've read+seen for myself... though, I never said that they don't deserve praise - you tried to say it for me. Contradictory to say, I happen to really like certain FF games, plus, their communities continue to do a great job with modification, they're 'tightly-knit', extremely outgoing and supportive. That most certainly deserves praise. What else can I say? I'm an ignorant, bipolar asshole.

"u jelly"? I assume that is some internet term for the phrased question "Are you jealous?", in which case, I most certainly am not. In fact, i'm not sure what I should be "jelly" of? :uhh: And the "no life"-o-meter? Yeah, i've noticed that some post counts are getting pretty high...

Yeah, but (sadly), not all games are such an easy joyride to edit text in :/
(which is why I bring up fan translations as one of the prime samples of what insane amount of talent is sometimes required to do what seemingly appears to just be a task for Notepad and friends)

I'm pretty sure I've several times in the past expressed my basic casual interest in the series.

Should we ever get 1.5, you might see me shine ^_^

What else can I say? I'm an ignorant, bipolar asshole.

In all seriousness, know it's personal (might've forgotten if it's already mentioned), but are you ... bipolar? (Got a couple of local friends whom are ... rollercoasters.)

Actually, I was fetching that from someone else. Shall not dive deeper into it - PM me if you for some reason would end up loosing sleep over it. ;D
Anyway, yeah! Some members (me included) have rising post counts, but, hey, gotta be "around" a little to stay in touch with people (especially when other mods/staff are busy/away/etc)

God Speed.

are you ... bipolar/rollercoaster?

Not sure why it's personal for you, but... very much so, yes.

Not a fucking chance. :rollseyes

Though i've gotta say... It's one thing to hide behind a PC monitor, but to shit on someone, through someone else's alias? That takes a true, gutless-fucking-coward. And this is the person I should be "jelly" of? Wow. Yeah, I can definitely understand that "no-life-o-meter", you mentioned before.

That's the spirit! Time for celebration

People will forever be one of the greatest puzzles of all. That's about all I can say.

God Speed.
It's of course a bloody huge IF. I've also got some of the finest on the sideline to provide additional tech support
