    So what are you guys using to render 3D backgrounds? Just got a new computer and figured I'd give it a shot.

    Blender is opensource, very powerful and has a pretty active community at blenderartists.org.
    You can watch tutorials at blenderguru and cgcookie.

    3DSMAX does more or less do the same things but is way more rooted in production environments.
    There is a 30-day free trial and you can register at Autodesk as a student to get a student license ( which basically only prevents network rendering).

    These are the packages I know but there are many more: Cinema 4D, Maya, Modo, XSI and Lightwave to name a few. Try them to your liking and learn the one you feel the most comfortable with.
