  • Horror Games of 2014

Greetings, lesser beings. Remember me? I remember you.

Anyway, Daddy needs his fix of horror. Since Resident Evil is like a damp nicotine patch to a 80 a day cigarette smoker at this point then I'll need something else. Give me a hookup. Here's what I've spotted already.

http://www.facethehorror.com/ - Asylum, by the guy who made Scratches. Fairly standard stuff, but Scratches was fun, so...

http://osome-studio.com/whitenight/ - White Light, inspired by the origional Alone in the Dark.

http://www.theastronauts.com/2013/09...e-screenshots/ - The Vanishing of Ethan Carter. Dunno much beyond that. Looks a little like Alan Wake, maybe?

http://www.krillbite.com/ats/ - Among the Sleep. You play as a barely walking toddler, at least to start with. Interesting idea. There is an alpha available to play, if you want?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Daylight_(video_game) - No weapons? Sign me up.

And of course the Evil Within, but I trust Mikami not at all these days.

Hm, I remember you from back when I spent an entire night reading through every single page of the 1.5 mega thread.

Don't forget about Dying Light, set in a post-apocalyptic open world with a day-and-night cycle. http://dyinglightgame.com/

I'll trust Mikami over the current capcom fucktards that just basically said "Fuck off" to the original fanbases for being "Too old".

I wont trust Mikami too much, but we'll see what he does.

Oh look, more zombie games that's... that's great, really.

Games where you have no weapons and have to just rely on hiding and running bore me. Outlast was great on the beginning but it dragged on for so long and running from the scripted enemies like the fat guy went from scary to annoying pretty fast.

I'm glad I'm not the only one. Combat has the potential to be scarier and more exhilarating when it's done right. Hiding all the time just feels too monotonous regardless of what game it is.

Horror games where run and hide all game are to me more stealth games than survival horror. All the best survival horror games give you the means to defend yourself with combat but just puts heavy limits on it in regards to supplies and combat ability.

A game where you can't defend yourself is not a Survival Horror game in general. It's just Horror.

The very definition of Survival Horror (which was coined by Mikami) is that you have means to defend yourself, albeit limited. That eliminates any "run and hide" game, such as Penumbra, Amnesia and Outlast.

Alien: Isolation from Creative Assembly / SEGA might be out at the end of the year, I suppose. Apparently, it was set to be properly revealed at VGX, but had its trailer pulled last minute.

                [edit]

Hnnnnnng... My hype pants are on.

They should make a series of games based on the Earth Hive/Nightmare Asylum/Female War trilogy. But no, Ripley's daughter...

You know Ripley's daughter is canon character from the movies, right? Alien Isolations looks very good so far. Can't wait to see more. Just don't fuck it up Sega like the Colonial Marines...

After the abomination that was Colonial Marines and the travesty that was Prometheus, hope for Alien(s) related stuff seemed grim... But after seeing actual gameplay footage for this, I'll be honest: I'm impressed. The game really does look gorgeous graphically and the soundtrack from what I've heard is very reminiscent of the movie... Actually, it might even have some of the same tracks (Could have also just been edited in with the gameplay footage though)? Gameplay looks great, very similar to Outlast from what I've seen, which is a good thing as I loved that game. Amanda Ripley being the main character this time around is also nice...

With both Alien and Aliens being some of my favorite movies of all time, I'm hoping this turns out as good as it looks. Still have some concerns though. Not sure how this kind of gameplay could last up to 8-10 hours or however long they plan for the game to be. Only one Alien, while could be great at first, could get monotonous and boring later on. What's gonna break up the pace besides puzzle solving/item scavenging? I thought I remember reading that there were human enemies confirmed somewhere and if that's the case, I don't think this is going to be as good as it looks. Would much rather the enemies be entirely Xenomorphs for once... But we'll see I guess. Don't screw this up Creative Assembly, I want to give you my money!

Which is why the story will be bollocks.

At least it's a good choice of character in terms of having motivation to seek out such horrors (unknowingly, I presume)

Thanks for sharing, didn't know about this one.

You should check Don't Starve ( http://www.dontstarvegame.com/ ). It has just been released on PS4 (and some time ago on PC). Some kind of RPGesque survival-horror game in a Tim Burton-like world. Pretty fun and interesting concept, with errors sanctioned by perma-death.

Alien Isolation reminds me of Enemy Zero from back in the day ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Enemy_Zero ). With better graphics but without weapons.
