Tropic Thunder - 4/10

Robert Downey Jr. was brilliant and this film's only saving *****. I just didn't find this movie too funny at all...I laughed maybe twice. Also, they spent way too much time poking fun at mentally retarded people. Way too much time.

I got invited to the premiere of The Taking of Pelham 123 last night, John Travolta plays an excellent bad guy in this movie, check it out if you like action films. good stuff

I just watched a film called Malcolm X. Brilliantly filmed but i do not like the man himself at all.

He just got on my nerves, and seemed a little racist against whites, sure he did a lot of good things for African Americans and stuff, but so did Martin Luther King Jr.

I love Malcolm X the man, he was great, you have to see where he's coming from though, whites treated blacks like garbage with segregation and stuff, it's only natural to develop a hatred against them while white's racism towards blacks are unjustified and wrong.

After he went to Mecca he saw that everyone, white muslims, black muslims, etc. were all together and after that he didn't show what you would call racism towards whites.

Plus that's how the Nation of Islam taught them, the white devil, Elijah Muhammed himself was full of it.

and MLK Jr was a great man

Watched Live Free or Die Hard last night and thought it was a good movie. Great action, story wasn't to hard to follow the only thing was the main villan was weak but he was a computer nerd.

yha its a good movie Justin Long is good in it as well. Justin is one of my favorite actors.

I hated the part when a white girl walks up to him and wants to help and join him in trying to give black people there rights, and he basically says to her to get out of his face cause she was white.

I know he was discriminated against himself as well, and Elijah messed with his head but I'm still not to sure about him, he was a violent man too. Like when he played that Russian roulette game.

Me, my cousin and a bunch of our friends watched "The Eye" last night. Sort of scary at some parts, mostly suspenseful and the end was very "oh ... oh BALLS." worthy. We had a good time and the movie was pretty good for what it was.

I just watched the original theatrical version of Alien before, the film is brilliant, and the direction is superb. I will be watching Aliens theatrical version soon as well, then I'm gonna watch the directors cut versions of both movies after that. I wonder which is better. Ill probably do the same with Alien 3 and Resurrection.

I really loved how at first the film doesn't follow Ripley at all, in the beginning she's no more than a side character. One who has never watched Alien before wouldn't even realize she was the main character until more than half way through the film. I love this technique that Ridley Scott used while filming it. It means he also gave many of the other characters time to develop so it was shocking when they died.

Also i love the sense of isolation and fear you get when Ripley discovers that Lambert and the other guy both got killed by the Alien and she realizes that she is now completely alone on the Nostromo, that would be terrifying to know that other that a tabby cat, the only other living thing on board this huge ship, is an Alien who is hunting you. It really scared me.

Also I am now intrigued by the Space Jockey, what the hell is he and why was he there?

Just saw 3 widely different and equally enjoyable movies.

"Purple Noon" (aka Plein Soleil) is the first adaptation of the novel The Talented Mr. Ripley. A re-adaptation was made around the late 90s with Matt Damon, Jude Law, Gwyneth Paltrow, and Philip Seymour Hoffman. It's about a man of a humble background who kills his far wealthier friend and assumes his identity. His motivation is left ambiguous, so it's cool to ponder whether Ripley wants his friend's status, woman, money, or just his life. Lots of shots of mirrors. Besides the beautiful environments (it's set around Italy, mostly in Rome), the acting is what shines in this film. Alain Delon is the perfect madman.

"Holy Mountain" is an allegorical film by Alejandro Jodorowsky, who's famous for "El Topo." In terms of trivia, the latter film was so well received that John Lennon and Yoko Ono funded "Holy Mountain." Now, it's incredibly hard for me to describe this movie in terms of synopsis, sequence, or themes. A lot of it is purely symbolic, and also its content is projected through its imagery, which is some of the most psychedelic I've ever seen. There are too many cultural, political, religious, and social images that clash multiple times in the same scene. What I will say however is that it's not for the easily offended, squeamish, etc. It makes A Clockwork Orange look like a Disney movie. There are films regarded as exploitation in nature, but I don't think "Holy Mountain" even fits in with those. Either way I think one could get a lot out of it, and the ending smacks you in the face.

"Ip Man" is a recent Chinese film made about the legendary martial arts master of the Wing Chun style. It's surprising that this is the first made about Ip, seeing as every biography you'll read about him says something along the lines of "OMG HE TRAINED BRUCE LEE!" The movie isn't just about Ip Man, but his town, Fo Shan. Towards the beginning you see Fo Shan portrayed as a tight-knit, peaceful community and then the second Sino-Japanese war kicks in. The mood completely changes to one of desolation, fear, and depression after Japan occupies. It definitely shattered any reservations I had about martial arts films. As a martial arts film however, the choreography (done by Sammo Hung of Jackie Chan, Bruce Lee, and John Woo fame) is exceptionally done and it gets exciting when the scene warrants. A wonderful film altogether because it's both entertaining and inspiring.

I just watched a movie called "Con Air" with Nicholas Cage in it. it was pretty good, it was about a bunch of prisoners who made an attempt to escape while on a flight getting a prison transfer. It had some very interesting characters in it, and was fun to watch.

Bob Clark's Deathdream. For those of you who don't know, Clark is responsible for such films as A Christmas Story, Porky's, and (*shudder*) Baby Geniuses. For horror fans however, he made the chilling 1974 film Black Christmas. BC was a Canadian thriller that was a low-key release at the time, but released four years before Halloween, it shared quite a few similarities with John Carpenter's flick (so much so that Clark claimed he told Carpenter an idea for a hypothetical BC sequel called yes, Halloween). Black Christmas was remade in 2006, and from what I saw, it was complete shit.

Anyway, Deathdream starts with a hazy Vietnam scene, and we're introduced to the main character, Andy. His friend immediately gets shot, and lets out some disturbing cries of pain. We see a few close-ups of a clearly traumatized Andy, and then he gets hit, and his fate is left unclear. The next moments of the film reveal the protagonist's family, who get a visit by an officer with news of Andy's death. Not long after though, Andy shows up at their door, and the plot sets in. I'd highly recommend Deathdream, as it's one of those effective films that mixes slow-paced suspense with well done practical effects (Tom Savini's first job, right back from Vietnam coincidentally). Also, the dynamic of Andy's family develops intriguingly throughout; the characterizations are thought out.

Watched RocknRolla yesterday. It was pretty good, but you had to watch it real closely or else you wouldn't know what they're doing, cos the plot was quite confusing, at least the beginning. But it was pretty good overall.
