  • New Resident Evil Comics on the Way

Capcom has announced that a deal has been struck with DC Comics to create new books based off the Resident Evil and Devil May Cry franchises. Not too much has been revealed yet, except that the comics will be released under the WildStorm brand. As you all may recall, Wildstorm was the publisher for the last set of Resident Evil comics which went on to make a total of 9 books. See the official PR below:

SAN MATEO, Calif. — Jul 25, 2008 -- DC Comics, the largest English-language publisher of comic books in the world, and Capcom®, a leading worldwide developer and publisher of video games, today announced plans to join forces to create a comic book series based on Capcom’s popular gaming properties Resident Evil® and Devil May Cry®.

“Capcom is thrilled to be partnering with DC,” said Germaine Gioia, Senior Vice President of Licensing for Capcom Entertainment, Inc. “Comics are a critical component in Capcom’s merchandising strategy for our most cherished franchises, as they target the same discerning, loyal fans that care most about these established brands. DC’s undisputed development and distribution strength within the comic industry make them an ideal partner to further expand two of our most successful and sophisticated gaming properties.”

Details on the new series, including creative team and launch month, will be announced at a later date. Both titles will be published by DC Comics’ WildStorm imprint.

“We’re ecstatic that Resident Evil is returning to WildStorm, where we have already established deep roots into the mythos of this world,” said Hank Kanalz, Vice President/General Manager for WildStorm. “We can’t wait to continue, and bring a freshness and excitement to the property to match the amazing things they are doing with the game.”

The Resident Evil series of video games has sold over 34 million units since the original game was released in 1996, as well as spawned a multi-million dollar trilogy of films from Sony Pictures. Resident Evil® 5 will revolutionize the Resident Evil series, just as Resident Evil® 4 did. To coincide with the Resident Evil comic book is the latest installment in the Resident Evil series, Resident Evil 5, which unveils a world where the biohazard threat has not ended: Just when it seemed the menace of Resident Evil was destroyed, a new terror appears in Resident Evil 5. Resident Evil’s returning hero, Chris Redfield, has followed the path of the evil around the globe, and after joining a new organization, heads to Africa, where the latest threat is transforming people and animals into mindless, bloodthirsty creatures. Joined by a new partner, Sheva Alomar, the duo must work together to unravel the truth behind the evil menace.

The latest in the Devil May Cry series, Devil May Cry® 4 is already a bonafide hit in the console world, having shipped over 2 million units worldwide since its release in North America in February. Devil May Cry 4 immerses gamers in a gothic supernatural world, where a new protagonist clashes with a familiar hero. As the new leading man, Nero, players will unleash incredible attacks and non-stop combos using a unique new gameplay mechanic: the powerful “Devil Bringer” on his right arm.

“Dante, Nero and the world of DEVIL MAY CRY is a perfect fit for the sensibilities of our studio,” Kanalz said. “We have such terrific inspiration from the anime and games and we intend on meeting the exceptionally high standard of quality that has been set for this.”

I hope the RE comics are good. Has anyone else read the others that were made in the past? Are they entertaining? Or just drivel?

When I read this announcement on IGN, my head immediately hit my desk.

        Repeatedly.

        Does that answer your question?

The comics were pretty dire back then.
Wildstorm tends to focus on movie and TV licence comics nowadays, so im not counting on anything spectacular unless they attached a decent writing/artist duo together, which probably won't happen.

              Interesting...
The old Wildstorm RE comics and the 'Fire and Ice' series, pretty much sucked. Although some of the art work was nice.
I can't imagine these new ones will be so lame. RE is a lot more popular now and there's the potential to sell a lot of comics. I expect (and hope) they will be a lot more sensible, adult and high quality.
I can't wait to hear some more details of the actual content and story lines. If they really are working with Capcom (and havn't just bought the license to use the RE name), they could fill in some holes in the RE time line and back story to events and characters etc.
Or they might be based around RE5..?

I'm still trying to get sets of the Hong Kong comics...
I had no luck finding them when in Hong Kong recently

                I'll definitely pass.

I'm sure the artwork will be good, though...

Good news IMO, I very much hope they are based on Chris and the lead up to R.E 5 or even just stories on what Jill and Rebecca are up to whilest time has gone on. I really don't want a story on someone new or a random person whos in Africa trying to get out of the country but needs to go through 100's of mad men/ ganado fakes to get to the nearest plane etc.

I've read the Code Veronica books, and those were pretty good actually. The only things I found terrible were the facial expression. Whenever they expressed any emotion it would be shown in a really dramatic way. Like if Claire was shocked, her mouth would open like a cobra's would to swallow a really fat rabbit.

Haha, yeah. Thanks. I'll steer clear. Like I did with those S.D. Perry novels.

They should make some cannon comics instead of just random stories thrown together.

The RE CV comic books were made by a Hong Kong publisher called King Fountain, DC Comics just bought the licence and published them in english. The old "Fire and Ice" and the RE comics pretty much sucks, the art, the narrative, all... IMO.

I hope the new ones will be better.

The CV comics were funny xD

Only thing I didn't like was that it looked like every other Chinese comic I've ever seen
(Then again, only Chinese comic's I've seen were my dad's collection, which usually involve kung fu... >_>)

Not to thrilled about the Wildstorm things though. I remember buying the first issue of that Resident Evil comic years back. Read the rest online. Not that great.
