Default The Resident Evil Zero Topic

Well I've been thinking a lot about RE0 because I'm excited for the Wii port. Haven't played this game since I sold my Gamecube many years ago and I'll be moving in with someone who has a Wii around the same time the port ocmes out.
    So it's all pretty nifty.

So let's talk about the prequel to RE1. What you liked, what you didn't like, is the game one of your favorites or least favorites, etc..

    I'll get the ball rolling.

-Third best voice-acting in the series IMO. After 4 and 5. (never was a fan of REmake's VAs)
-second best soundtrack in the series after RE2's.
-not much in the way of a cast of characters. Mostly just Billy, Rebecca and Marcus. However that's more than enough as we learn more about those three than we usually do about the enitre cas tin RE games. Plus the Birkin and Wesker cameos were superb.
And is it just me or does Enrico in Zero sound exactly the same as in RE1 (the original)?
-the Leech Zombies were pretty cool new enemies complete with their own creepy ass music. I also liked the Eliminators though they were basically Hunters.
-weakest set of bosses in the entire series I'm sad to say. Though i liked the Proto Tyrant kinda.
-sure it's only fanon but BillyxBecky is the best RE couple for me.

And that's all I can think of to say right now.

Obviously story-wise is gonna be kind of bad because it was done after the original games so many things are forced to fit in, but I don't think it was terrible.

And about the villian, the problem here was design. I know many people don't like Umbrella Chronicles retelling of the story, Spoiler:

This game was very underrated. I agree that most of the story could have been better, and Marcus was a bit lame with his whole singing to the leeches crap. It would have been cool in an anime film, but not in Resident Evil. I also agree that the voice acting was very good. Persoanlly, I felt let down by this game just because I thought that you were actually going to explore the mansion with the bravo team, but no, I've gotta check out this train. I thought some of the enemies were pretty cool, I liked the Proto Tyrant with it's sick twitch, the new addition of the Eliminators and even the Leech clones, even though they pissed me off a lot. I didn't like the mindset for the bosses in this game, where they basically took a normal insect/bat, then made them huge lol. I also liked that you could majically stumble upon the underground lab from RE2, which confuses me a bit. It was nice to see that place with updated graphics, but the whole time I just kept thinking...I'm underneath Raccoon city and they have no idea what's about to hit them lol. It would have been neat if you could work your way up to the RPD from the lab, and there's Marvin and abunch of cops just walking around doing their buisness, but then that would probably be the end of the game lol.

Anywho, I thought the game deserved a bit more recognition for it's overall effort. I mean, it had good VA, some of the best graphics ever, a very suitable inventory system, nice soundtrack, good puzzles, cool cameos, and an awesome opening cutscene that matches up perfectly with the one from the remake. It also has a nice ending that sets up RE1. Hell, I even loved Dr. Marcus and his whole story of revenge (it really showed how ruthless Birkin and Wesker were), I could have just done without the long hair, nightgown and singing lol.
All in all I thought it was a decent game, and it made me sad when I bought this game and enjoyed it...then found out that it's poor sells almost made the franchise go under.

Best part of RE zero is that you get to run around parts of the UMB lab from RE2 (almost made me forget every other weak part of the game for a while) almost like Capcom were teasing us for a future REmake of RE2, something I really wanted and that I thought we would get to play one of these days due to the popularity of the game. But I guess I was wrong, I have been wrong (one time) before, I actually thought we would be playing 1.5 by now as well;). //Kim

That's interesting, I've tried to play through zero two times and would reach a point where I didn't know what to do next so I stopped playing (I'm not into walk throughs since they ruin games, lame huh?) anyhow I am interested in seeing this umbrella lab..sounds interesting especially since I picked up file # 2 and saw the RPD in 128bit.

I attribute Zero's poor sales to being a Gamecube exclusive and not really in high demand. I mean everyone knew about the original Resident Evil and so a remake of it, more serious and dark, simply appealed to more. RE4's new gameplay and whatnot also appealed to more people.
REZero is a game really for major fans of the series. And sadly major fans of the series usually tend ot be against change to the point of getting a mob together with torches to smake sure it doesn't happen.

Personally I liked Marcus. As REmaster said, it showed how ruthless Birkin and Wesker were. I also don't mind singing to leeches..what's the difference between that and magically controlling tentacles and ants in CVX? Nothing.

Oh and thanks for reminding me REmaster. REZero's ending is my favorite in the whole series.

Also, just for fun, this was part of a review of Zero I found on another site. Hilarious IMO.

I've been exploring the trial version lately is it me or the trial version a lot harder than the real game the character AI never shoots the enemy when your together and when you leave Rebecca in a room with zombies she's constantly nagging you on the radio for help like she doesn't know how to use a weapon and protect herself.
If he had a brain, he'd be dangerous.

Well it is only a small part of it that you actually get to play, but well worth playing RE zero for in my opinion. //Kim

Yes, it is very nice. It's a major tease of course, but it brings back some very fond memories.

    INFLAMES LOGGED ON?!
    xD
My favourite part of the game was the Train, otherwise, I thought the rest was sort of, weak.
Either way, I loved this game so much, and the soundtrack was amazing. <3

Leech zombies were nice (and leech man in Outbreak is an arse tit!)

But Marcus was just stupid (most of the time. I also agree that UC did improve upon that a bit). The bosses in general were kinda meh at times too. They were too much like "what do we have in our backyard that we can inflate?"

Billy and Rebecca were a good set of main characters and the swap system was nice. Would've been awesome to see some sort of co-op "enhanced" version of the game.

Also, revisiting locations is also kinda cool (just like in Outbreak). Makes me hope that Darkside Chronicles will have some nice stuff (Marvin scenario w/potential 1.5 nods, maybe?)

And I too am a fan of the train. It was a really nice start setting (for the sake of curiosity, I hope a full N64 playthrough or a playable demo of the train segment will surface one day)

The problem with zero in my opinion is that due to the story of RE1 there was really no way to do a viable prequel that would fit.
The whole training facility in Raccoon Forest was a bit too convienient for my liking. In RE1 they did such a good job of explaining everything, such as why the mansion had been abandoned so long after the accident before STARS moved in etc. In zero, lets just spread the virus via leeches and suddenly everyone's a rapidly decaying zombie within minutes.

    The only way would have been Bravo Team running round the forest all night and then into the mansion {i remember Shinji Mikami saying in an interview prior to the games release that if he was director, he would have shown how each Bravo Team member died one by one.}

Personally, I didn't think RE0 was that bad. As a matter of fact, I really liked it.

For one thing, it's very very much the survival aspect of survival horror. I relied on my knife more times than I care to mention. Or maybe that's just me failing at life.

Also, like many others, I really liked the soundtrack. The dark, brooding theme of the training facility gave me the creeps big-time. And those violins really work their magic during Leech Zombie encounters (I think it's violin playing, anyway.)

The graphics are absolutely top-notch, and pretty damn good even by today's standards (much like REmake's). And truth be told, I didn't even realize I was in the Umbrella lab until I was in the trainyard. I was like "...I've been here bef-- OMG." XD Makes me really want a REmake-style RE2... D:

I liked a lot about RE0, but often found myself becoming frustrated by the gameplay. That's probably why I've never gone back and replayed it.
