  • Ok, someone explain to me Silent Hill

I seen the movie, I've heard of the game. What is the deal with this town?

  • #2
    If you go to http://db.gamefaqs.com/console/psx/f...ill_plot_a.txt
The guide will basically explain what all the games are about and the quote is directly from the guide.

Silent Hill was and is a normal resort town, perfectly similar to any
other town, except that it is home to a small cult that sells
narcotics. There are 3 towns, normal Silent Hill, Dark Silent Hill, and
Fog Silent Hill. In the original game, it is made clear that the cult,
headed by Dahlia Gillespie is after raising a demon, one of the old
Gods, Samael. He is an eagle-winged beast with winged ears and a dog's
snout, legs of a goat and arms of a strong man.

Members of the cult include Dahlia Gillespie, Dr. Kaufmann, and two
others, one Asian doctor and another man (probably Norman, the owner of
the Bates Motel). Dahlia, in charge of the cult, learns that Samael can
be raised in an unborn infant, and proceeds to do ancient rituals to
get her baby, conceived with Kaufmann, to be that infant. She fails
however, and only gets half of the angel, resulting in Alessa. She then
decides that she will try again, for the other half, and has Cheryl.
Neither of these children is normal, and thus cannot be assumed normal.
Alessa is burned alive, in an attempt to raise her power, so that the
cult (Dahlia) can draw off of it. She never heals, and in order to tap
the power, must be kept alive.

Kaufmann does this, but he needs an assistant; enter Lisa. Lisa works
for the cult for a little while, seven years, then decides that it is
evil, and puts the new baby, Cheryl on the side of the road. Alessa,
being angry, and imbued with great power, creates dark Silent Hill.
She hides her soul in this world, from her mother, who cannot enter
this realm. However, as her power comes from Samael, Samael is now in
the town, and his presence will never be fully erased. Thus even after
Alessa is killed, the town retains the power to be black and evil, or
foggy, depending upon the person entering the town, and their
character. Dahlia also gains her dark power from Samael, which she uses
to create fog Silent Hill, where she hides from society to do her
    worships.

She summons Cheryl to this town, along with Harry, so that she will
reach Alessa, and get the other half of the god. She believes that
Cheryl, the other half of the god, will be drawn to her sister's pain,
and thus Dahlia will find Alessa, and make the dark god whole. After
Dahlia dies, Samael retains this dimension as well. Harry eventually
comes in contact with Dahlia in her foggy realm, and gets the Flauros,
an item able to summon the light power of the Archangel Metratron.
When Harry finally confronts Alessa, she is matured in her dark power
more than Cheryl, and so she fights for what Harry sees as evil,
whereas all Alessa is really trying to do is escape the pain she is
inflicted with. Harry uses the Flauros, and Metatron comes to counter
    the evil effects of Samael.

Now that Metatron has entered the town, his essence too will never be
fully removed. Dahlia finds Alessa thus, and brings her together with
Cheryl, whom she has taken. (Not truly by force either, because Cheryl
is drawn to her sister). Then Harry finds Alessa and Dahlia, and he
puts an end to Alessa/Samael. Samael is evil and thus Alessa is bent on
destruction, due to the evil his power is used for. Once his form is
destroyed, he is weakened, but his essence remains. Only evil people
are allowed to enter this darker realm of Silent Hill. The town is
somewhat of a smaller world in itself, because it is good and evil.
Once Samael was summoned into the child, and Metatron was summoned to
do battle, they both retained a special place in their hearts for
Silent Hill, because it is somewhat of a battlefield for good and evil.
In this manner, each person coming into the town is either allowed into
the normal, almost saintly town of Silent Hill, or the darker realms.
The normal town is a resort town, and it used to be a sacred area, says
    Mary.

The normal town is still imbued with happiness and light, and this is
why Mary wanted to go to the town again, and overall it is a wonderful
place to be. It becomes even more so when the darker realms are
separated from the light, leaving almost Heaven on earth. Neither good
nor evil can outdo one another, but they can make sure that the other
does not overstep their bounds. The history of the town also lends
itself to a Jihad, because of the evil that had occurred in the past.
Then James enters, having left only a week prior, but now he has a sin
on his soul. James gets into Silent Hill, and is thus brought to Hell
    for his wrongdoings.

Awesome games. So it looks you never played the games. Start of with the first one, then go through 4, obviously. Silent Hill is just a wierd freakish town with all kinds of stuff happens, just like Raccoon City. But Silent Hill happenings are more based off religious cult, while Raccoon is biohazard. They both are considered small towns, but in the RE movies, Raccoon City seems like a major city. Silent Hill is a resort town you visit to relax and take your mind of things. Raccoon City is a more industrial/commercial town opporated by a major enterprise.

If you want to constantly think to yourself, "what the fuck?!", have your heart beat a million miles per second while you constantly hear what sounds to be a female about to breath her dying breath while she's crying with random demons that won't die constantly following and attacking you, and/or if you like sick, demented mind-games, play Silent Hill. Now.
          I'm a blackstar.

Which side of Silent Hill do you want explained, the film version, the Silent Hill which grants the power to birth a God (Silent Hill 1, 3 and 4) or the Silent Hill which brings out you're guilt and past (Silent Hill 2)?

Ok, then why after the first game (when you beat everything and win...sort of), is the town still messed up?

The town was messed up long before the first game.

As far as I remember, the town was something to do with pilgrams or Indians or something back when America was founded or whatever, but back then it was sacred land. The Americans came and took over and many tragic things happened, such as a plauge which nearly wiped out the whole town (with all the dead thrown into the Toluca Lake) and the Prison being built around the Civil War era. This was around the time the Red Pyramid was first sighted, as the helmet was worn by executioners back then. There was also a fire that destroyed much of Silent Hill many years before the first game. This fire was started by Dahlia to burn her house down and burn Alyssa too to bring about the birth of God. This fire spread and almost destroyed all of Silent Hill. The location of the fire is now known as Old Silent Hill, which is beside the main town of Silent Hill.

That's really the main back story. It mainly relates to it always being messed up. Whether the bad shit that happened was due to the land or helped make the land further messed up is open to speculation.

The town itself is also questionable. Some say it is populated and that the characters in the games are just stuck in a different dimension. Silent Hill 1, 2 and 3 would support this theory as in 1, Harry is taking Sheryll there for a vacation, with no mention of the town being abandoned or such, and Cybil doesn't mention that the town is abandoned. In Silent Hill 3, Douglas mentions how he had a case in Silent Hill, and how Vincent mentions the apperance of the monsters as though they're people. In 2, James and Mary visited the town before the game. However, some argue that the town is deserted and such. They're talking shit, don't listen to them.

The film of course sets a different back story. The town has always had the cult, which burned witches to keep away the apocalypse, which is very different to the game where they are trying to bring about the birth of a God. The fire was started by Dahlia but in the game it did not destroy the whole town, although it almost did, and the town is still active today, unlike the film where the town is abandoned as they set the whole coal mining back story and such.

But yeah, Alyssa is able to reap revenge and bring about darkness, Gods can be born and the town can summon people to the land for punishment and such is due to the town being very fucked up forever. Maybe Origins will explain some of this further.

If you have any questions, ask away as i'm going to re-read Lost Memories to get the full backstory again.

Ok, what the hell were those creatures in the movie? Mainly the first ones the woman encountered; black screaming things in the fenced area.

Well, there are monsters but they did not originate from a viral outbreak. They are more like an incarnation of a seriously screwed up nightmare and some monsters like Pyramid Head and Leonard Wolf are out to ride the world of sinners. All of the games take place in Silent Hill, although 3 and 4 are actually set outside the town as well. Kinda creepy, as it makes you feel like you aren't safe anywhere. They pulled this off quite nicely in part 4 because your own home becomes haunted and if you do not exorcise the ghosts then you may come back into the real world right infront of a bad spot...

Well the movie creatures are mainly taken from the games. Those creatures in the fenced area were a manifestation of Alessa. They represent the punisment she gave to the children who bullied her. They are visually burned children whos skin has been pulled back at the face. I think they had a slightly different meaning in the games however.

The straight jackter creature which Cybil and Rose encounter near the destroyed road is taken straight from Silent Hill 2. Within Silent Hill 2's context, it is to show agony and suffering, that of which James felt during Mary's illness. I guess it could also fit in to the Silent Hill movie, as a manifestation of Alessa's agony anf suffering.

The Red Pyramid or Pyramid Head is another creature taken straight from Silent Hill 2. In the game, he is a manifestation of James' guilt and feeling that he needs to be punished for what he did. The triangle shape of his helmet is to symbolize the love triangle of the game, between James, Mary and Maria. Also, the helmet is supposed to give the impression of sharpness and pain, as though the creature is in pain. Within the film context, he is a figure whom Alessa uses to punish. Dalhia also seems to command it in the film at one point, relating to the theme of "mother is god in the eyes of a child" within the film.

The janitor was a creature who was created for the film. He was the janitor of the school who, it is hinted, raped Alessa. He was inspired by the image of a corpse in the toilets of the Midwich Elementary in the first Silent Hill game.

The nurses are, again, straight from the games. Although they are visually similar to the nurses seen in the second game, there metaphor is based around the first game. They are to show Alessa's fear of the nurses from when she was put in hospital. There visual apperance is based around Silent Hill 2. It is meant to symbolize James' sexual frustration and Mary's hospitilization.

The insects that are seen following the Pyramid Head are Creepers. Within Silent Hill 1's context, they were, along with the huge larva, to represent Alessa's dislike for bugs. Within the film context, it could be the same reason, however, they bare an almost human face, so it could be Alessa's view of humanity? I'm not to sure on this one.

Nice theory randomwab. I really never pay that much attention when I'm playing the games. Although if you watch the movie with much intent, you'll probably notice that near the start of the film as Rose stops in an underpass while looking for Sharon, if you use the zoom feature on the DVD you can spot the wording "CHERYL AND WOLF" written onto the wall behind her. A reference to Cheryl Mason in Silent Hill 1 and perhaps Claudia Wolf as well from Silent Hill 3, Alessa Gillespie's best friend who went to school with her back before she was burned.

See, I tried really hard to buy the first game for $20 and then the guy sold it to someone else. Now I can't get it lower than $40.
