I saw it and i enjoyed it. I liked the previous movies but i wasn't so sure if i was going to like this one because they went with the 3D gimmick which i'm against and also drew elements from RE4/5 which i didn't like, but i was pleasantly surprised. I actually think it might be the best one so far.
Completely agree with this statement. Might even go so far as to say I agree with the last part too, possibly. It's a very close contender with the first RE film. I really enjoyed that too and liked the Red Queen and the fact they were trapped, I liked Rain Ocampo's character too, but I really enjoyed Afterlife's atmosphere and found myself enjoying the film a lot more than I expected to. I enjoyed the first two but thought Extinction was an utter steaming pile of shite, so following that, I was expecting this to be pretty bad too. I was pleasantly suprised when I came out the cinema, finding that I'd really enjoyed the film and it was on par with the first, which up until now had been my favourite.
I saw the film, had a great time, will be buying it on blu-ray when it comes out and will watch the next one as well. And guess what I'm listening to? The Afterlife OST. If anyone else doesn't like it, tough. What I do in my free time is my business. If you don't like the film and don't want to support it, fine, then don't; but don't tell me what to do with my free time and money and criticize me for not doing what you'd like me to do.

Why are people still going on about this? You guys are not offending anybody by saying you liked the movie, so who gives a crap? More power to you if you liked it, just like you should be saying the same to me for not wanting to contribute money to a movie series that I find to be complete and utter genital bacteria. I don't like it, you guys love it, who gives a shit. If you honestly care and get offended that someone likes it or hates it, you really need to get your priorities fixed.
Can't really agree that there's ever a "just reason" to attack anyone simply for going to see a film.
Alexia - If you like it, that's fine... it was never the point to complain about the people who liked it, only those who did and then decided to try and cram reasons down the throats of people who didn't like it as if it was going to work. As for the people who didn't like it, knew they wouldn't and still went and saw it... well just read my follow up post for more information on what I mean, no point in repeating the whole thing.
I may be a little biased… but since I played the character of Ricardo Irving in Resident Evil 5, i’d like to see him put me in the movie.
I’ve been a fan of the video games for years, I have been an actor my whole life, and this could be a huge break for me!
How cool would it be if the fans of Resident Evil 5 helped me. If you liked my role in Resident Evil 5 I would be honored if you could voice your support on the internet like many many have already done!
Feel free to check out my website and drop me a line! Thanks to all the fans!
Correction, people who haven't seen the movie yet are ready to rip into anyone that dares even watch it is ripping the community apart, and it's always the same people stirring shit up too, every time.

Most of the critics and fans were ready to rip this apart before it even hit theaters and i understand that, all video game movies have that exact same response upon release, but honestly its easy to figure out. If you liked the previous movies you'll like this one, if you didn't then you won't. Simple.
Watched it last weekend on cinema, on 2D. I was expecting the worst really, or rather, I decided to have no expectations at all.
I hardly remembered what Extinction was about but the first thing that I noticed was how un-desertic the places they went looked. I remember at the beginning of the Extinction film they said the fresh water from the Earth had almost ran out and that was why it all happened in the desert. Did that change at the end of the film? I don't remember.
To be honest, I wasn't bored with the film, but a great film it was not. The screenplay as usual was dreadful and predictable, I knew precisely when which character was going to die, with the exception of Spoiler:
Angel, which did take me unguarded
.
But the main problem with the screenplay was that it added absolutely NOTHING to the whole storyline of the RE movies. Chris and Claire's reunion was an absolute wasted opportunity, it could have been an emotional part in the movie, instead it was like, "we're brothers, cool, now let's fight zombies". It was basically a film about a) fights in the Umbrella lab (which I thought was the best part), b) fights in the prison c) fights in the ship. The secondary characters weren't even fleshed out so you could care a bit about them, just a pair of lines here and there and then they get zombie-eaten. Such a waste.
Another thing is the abuse of the Matrix-esque slow motion parts on the fight scenes. Do it 3 or 4 times and it is cool, but a WHOLE battle with that is boring.
I did like how Wesker was portrayed though, and I liked the Umbrella lab attack (even with the abuse of the slow motion), but apart from that... entertaining, but hardly makes you want to rewatch it.
I don't know if someone already posted or noticed (can't really go through all the posts right now) that Wesker DID survive, just before Luther exits the tunnel, the screen shows what appears to be a parachute...
A movie which depicts a world where everything from plastic cups to underwear has an image of umbrella, which authors dont understand the meaning of "homage" when they throw in scenes from RE5 and Matrix without any actual meaning or reference. Where Chris´ and Claires reunion is so embarassing and against all possibilities and logic, with absolutely no build-up for any target group in the audience. Needless to say, I facepalmed through the entire 1.5 hours, cringed at every scene and laughed when the movie ended. It was utter and complete garbage with its only, factually only value being some scenes one would want to see for its 3D. Needless to say, that value is almost insignificant when we look at the big picture.
WHy would anyone be defending something which relies purely on visual effects and caters to casual, mainstream gamers who remember only a couple of names and scenes from the games theyve played (and thrown away), among the people who cant appreciate quality anyway?
Sadly MoS it's all about the Benjamins nowadays, not substance. The only way I could see anyone really enjoying this movie is if they had no clue about what Resident Evil is and/or simply has no taste in movies. I don't care what the hell they put in this movie, rocket ships flying through a futuristic Avalon, or people being able to communicate with their minds, nothing could possibly save this movie from being a giant dung heap.

I think this is a bit hypocritical when you honestly sit down and objectively consider the quality of the original game's storyline anyway. They're our favourite, or one of our favourite series, for sure, but things aren't as amazing as people seem to think they are.
I think it's ridiculous that people think that people who can enjoy a movie like this have either no taste or don't know what Resident Evil is.
The films have wide spread appeal - that's understandable, and it's why the movies make so much money in the first place (Afterlife has been a commercial success as far as I'm aware). Liberties need to be taken with the storyline, which, naturally, pull it more and more away from the original games.
That being said, the fact that you expect Afterlife to bring things back to the original storylines after what we got in "Genesis", Apocalypse and Extinction is laughable in itself. Why go see a movie that you know you're going to hate?
I feel sorry for people who claim to have AMAZING TASTE in film but can't sit down and enjoy what is no doubt a popcorn movie that really isn't meant to evoke or stimulate any thoughtful response from the viewer.
Ironically most of my qualms about the film were to do with the shoehorning of videogame elements into the film without any proper explanation, but the movie itself was still quite bearable.
Anyway.... (Spoilers ahead)
I just got back from my viewing in IMAX 3D. The 3D was definitely over the top and very gimmicky but I kind of liked it that way. There was one particular sequence where a chunk of sputum appeared to be on my glasses and I reached to wipe it off. It was a bit of a strange moment.
+ Liked the fact that Claire wore what she wore in RE2 (kind of)
+ Chris was okay
+ Music was pretty amazing
+ Opening scene was very odd, but had some kind of appeal for me
+ Executioner looked just like it did in RE5
+ Overall the pacing was much better put together than Extinction in particular.
- No future proofing at all. Jill and Chris have no reason to know eachother, Redfields didn't seem to know who Wesker was, thus there is no rivalry developed between Chris and Wesker. I don't even think that Claire knows who Chris really is - the movie makes it seem as if Chris was lying or something.
- Executioned was a terrible shoe in to reference RE5. No explanations given as to why that thing was there or how it acted.
- Same deal with Plagas 2.0 zombies.
- No proper explanation for Chris' imprisonment
- Guns don't work when wet. =/
- More boring stock characters who were introduced then died
- Wesker was too boyish and not threatening.
- Overuse of those ridiculous mega bombs
- We need to start seeing TriCell, or Excella or something.
- Wesker spewing out random tentacle devourers? Seemed kind of odd.
But yeah. I mean, it's not anything groundbreaking, but it was a fun movie to go and see with your friends. I did moan and groan at some scenes and some horribly transposed lines from the games, but otherwise I still enjoyed it for what it was
I would think that after four installments, when the inevitable sequel comes out most of you who hate it will know to stay away. There's no point putting yourself through these "terrible" movies if you think you know what to expect already. Things won't change.
I just watched the ridiculous RE5 ripped fight scene again. How the hell do Claire and Chris not shoot and hit each other? They are aiming right at each other and standing just yards apart for god's sake! Wesker may be fast enough to dodge, but I doubt they are!
So, I've sat down and thought about it a while and I'll go with, 'It could have been worse but only if it started shooting rabid bees into the cinema while it played.' Which is better than Apcolypse, where the bees would have, I feel, improved the experience. All in all I'll rate it worse than Genesis, better than Apocolypse and about the same as Extinction.
I know it's meant to be a brainless popcorn flick, and I didn't exactly have high hopes when I was dragged, screaming and begging the Dark Lords to strike me down, into the cinema. Still, it was a bit...too brainless, even for a popcorn flick. The first one pulled it off. The sequals...really haven't. I'm guessing the heavy focus on Alice means they have no room for plot? Anyway, details.
Spoiler:
So...yeah. An implosion bomb or something? Really? You just had spare cash in the special effects budget, didn't you? A normal explosion would have worked just as well. The fact that explosion bomb is apparently a tiny device next to hanger is kinda of a what? moment too. Still, it did set up for the equally what? ending.
The Clone Army was never a good plotline. There was no where good it could go. Being destroyed ten minutes into the movie was not the best plan in the world, really, given how big a deal was made of it. It really looked like they had no idea what to do with and so it was scrapped.
How the hell does Alice survive the plane crash? Wesker is so badly hurt he needs his super human mutations to keep him alive, and they start taking over. Alice is mortal, again, and apparently survive the same plane crash completely unscaved. Obviously, again, Anderson had no idea either and just screamed, 'A WIZARD DID IT!' at the production crew.
It's nice to see all the greenery back. What with the third movie telling us it was all dead. I swear, there are so many plotholes in these movies that it's more like a plot net...
OK, Plagas zombies burrowing. OK. How? I hate to mention it, but Predetor Face doesn't mean you can dig through concrete. They don't have claws or acid...so, yeah. There really was no need to add them in. If you wanted a burrowing animal the RE games do have several, such as Grave Digger, which you could base it on. Same goes for Executioner. Who made him, as he was obviously made? Why was he there? Seriously, did anyone think about this shit and just not put it in the movie or did Anderson just keep screaming a, 'A WIZARD DID IT! MORE ALICE WILL MAKE IT BETTER!'
Coins as ammo. Why? OK, so you can't find bullets and you somehow manage to set up a pair of shotguns so they can be rapidly reloaded with coins and a charge of gunpowder, which is pretty impossible and why people use shells...where do you get the gunpowder? Do you seriously expect me to believe Alice can make military grade gun powder easily?
When the zombies get in A) Since when have they started running and B) how the blue fuck did they all find there way to the top of the building in 0.7 seconds? Talk about a pacing issue...still, it's nice to know that someone told Anderson the Walking Dead was set in a prison so it would be perfect for his movie.
I admit, I was tuning out at this point, whimpering and crying for the brain cells I could feel commiting seppuku rather than trying to deal with any more plot failures, but how exactly did they find the Arcadia boat thingy? As far as I saw they just took a dingy and sailed over to it, but they shouldn't have known where it was.
Claire's amnesia was nice and...totally pointless. I guess it actually having any relevance to anything ever would have taken too much time away from Alice? They even made it so the Redfields did stuff that mattered, like not die at Wesker's hands and shoot him! That's enough non-Alice stuff for anyone.
Wesker. Just...Wesker. Others have mentioned his accent's rapid changes, the dodgyness of his fights and death(s) and the interesting reasoning behind why he was stalking Alice by satelite...but not doing anything to try and get her otherwise. I'll just leave it there.
Why are Umbrella still catching people? OK, when Wesker gets brain hungry I can see it, but...they were catching people before that, as seen with Claire and Co. Why? They don't need more bio-weapons, they don't need more cash. They need survivors for breeding, if nothing else. At least in Extinction the evil experiements made a certain sense, since they were on zombies. People are a distinctly finite resource now. Keeping them all in tubes for experimenting seems like a bad plan.
I must admit, I could not see why, exactly, people are so sure Wesker lives. I couldn't see the parachute that was meant to come off, only chunk of air craft. Maybe I'm missing something. I hope not...

I was never a fan of the first RE and they fixed all the issues I had with it with REmake, which most of RE fans thought was a fantastic game. Not to mention the fact that 9 years of plot development created hundreds of thousands of pages of discussions, theories and actually interesting threads. Hundreds of fansites and the games in their era were detailed in plot and had enough depth for people to like them for something more than just cool sunglasses or megamuscles. So no. Im not being hypocritical and neither am I lying to myself.

I like movies. From comedy to drama. From low budget to high budget. I appreciate movies for their entertainment value. Its the oldest excuse in the book- "the movie was awesome because youre entertained for 1.5 hours". If you need entertainment so bad that you have to go and see any movie, you cant manage your time and/or you dont have hobbies.
Liberties need to be taken with the storyline, which, naturally, pull it more and more away from the original games.
El oh el.
RE Degeneration was awesome.

I didnt "go" see this movie.

I know whats a good popcorn flick and what isnt. I dont pride myself in having a "better taste" in movies. I see and have seen hundreds of movies from crap to fantastic. That doesnt mean I am unable to recognize whats bad and what isnt.

Theres nothing ironic about it, unless youve misused the word. The use of videogame elements with no background, no actual necessity and no point is what the movie consisted of, next to "cool speshul fx". If I wanted to go see a movie for its special effects, I would fire up Crysis and shoot me up some 10´000 barrels.
I would think that after four installments, when the inevitable sequel comes out most of you who hate it will know to stay away. There's no point putting yourself through these "terrible" movies if you think you know what to expect already. Things won't change.
I havent seen a single RE movie in its theatre release. And most of us (who hate the movies) and have seen them in their release just want to see how bad they can get.
