My workplace is taking donations for flood relief. Hopefully everyone can pull together and pitch in something, as being in Melbourne there's not alot we can do directly.

I heard on the radio driving home today that when the water has receeded somewhat tomorrow they can begin searching for bodies. Truly sad stuff - I hope there's not too much more bad news to come.

^ So is mine, we're helping out and taking donations for the Salvation Army's donation drive but Dogs NSW and the other state, national groups are also taking money to help support those who have suffered in the flood, as well as any animals that may have been injured or have lost their owners to be rehomed and the like.

Well Bundaberg is going under AGAIN! Thankfully it's only a minor flood at the moment, but it's cut the city virtually in half with many busy roads being cut. And with the major highway cut both north and south, supplies are very limited. Hercules aircrafts are flying in to bring supplies and the trucks delivering them from the airport are under police escort. If we get anymore rain (which if this cyclone ends up crossing the coast we will get some) then we are screwed again.

And Enetirnel, I hope your friends and family are safe. I'm glad you guys weren't on the property at the time this hit. So far confirmed deaths are at 15, and missing has dropped back to 61, but these numbers will change by this afternoon. I really want to commend the SES crews, Emergency Crews, Salvos, RSPCA, Police, Defence Force and anyone else volunteering during these events. They have done an admirable job and if it weren't for their swift responses, I'm sure the death toll and missing persons count would be much greater.

I guess I'm thankful that I live in Bundoora. My dad said that Bundoora has a high land elevation ... thing. So I don't have to worry about the flooding here.

Mr. Spencer, I made this thread for all natural disasters happening in the world, not just Australia. We heard about the floods in Sri Lanka and near Rio de Janiero just this afternoon and that too is clearly a terrible tragedy. Nearly 500 dead is a phenomenal amount to comprehend and is very sad.

What's even more tragic is the fact that we cannot do a single thing about it.

Well, we certainly can't run out and help. But throwing money at problems can help resolve them. Just make sure to give to a charity that has most of the money going to the people who need it...

I agree, which is why I donate to Cancer Research UK and the British Heart Foundation.

So the part of Australia that was flooded earlier in the year, Queensland, has a category 5 cyclone off the coast, which is expected to hit at about 11pm local time, which is in about 4 hours.

The cyclone is absolutley massive. Here's what it looks like superimposed over the United States, to give people a perspective on the scale if it

Here's the source of the image, an the article also has other comparisons.

Here's hoping that everyone comes through the other side ok...

The same thing that has been happening for millennia.

Also, it's interesting how almost all these natural disasters affect the antipodean world. It's almost as though they don't happen anywhere else!
