Since I judge narrative crown on the ability to tell an epic story without detriment to its integrity as a game, my vote goes for either Mass Effect or Uncharted on that point.

Still, SH2 is a fantastic game and it's a strange feeling knowing it's already ten years old. Happy anniversary.

....again, I've just acquired Blood Omen and Soul Reaver to start playing through the series. What is it with all these games I've yet to play apparently being awesome?

The Legacy of Kain series, in my opinion, has one of the best narratives in gaming history. The writing is top notch, probably the closest we'll ever get to a Shakespearean play in video game form.

Amy Hennig, who writes the Uncharted series, also wrote the LoK series, so that should give you an idea. The difference being that while the writing in the Uncharted games is excellent, the actual stories are pretty ho hum. The LoK games actually require you to think.

I would also like to say that the only time I've ever gotten choked up by a game was during a certain scene in Defiance. It was one of the few times I was really caught off guard by a game's story.

I'm going to mention the Syphon Filter series, as it's a narrative that actually makes sense and flows well from one game to the next.

Plus it's written by John Garvin.

Yes, it'd go down in history, if it wasn't such a rip-off of a pre-existing work. Same goes for SNATCHER, though that's more of a pastiche, anyway.

Nonetheless, I'd definitely give SH2 the narrative crown, if I could give the characterization crown to SH3.

I went over to my friend's house and watched him beat it last night. Leave ending. Needless to say he looked like he had a rough night of sleeping when I saw him this morning.

I didn't think anyone else on here liked LOK

You're absolutely right, the narrative is truly amazing. My old sig was from a quote from defiance that I found very moving. The series has received a lot of flak for not having the best game play, but that's when the superb story telling comes in. The voice acting is some of the best I've ever heard, especially from Kain. I wish they'd make another one, but alas the plot is all wrapped up. I guess that's never stopped anyone before though.

"One can only match, move by move, the machinations of fate... and thus defy the tyrannous stars." - Kain

    Anyways, Happy B-day SH2.

Since we're talking about narrative in videogames, I would like to mention Grim Fandango and the Kyle Hyde games (Hotel Dusk & Last Window) as my favorites.

the most recent copy of Silent Hill 2 for the PS2 was purchased pre-played at Gamestop, and unfortunately there was damage that caused the cutscenes to skip horrendously.. not the first time i've had skip/freezing problems with a Silent Hill 2 disk, either.. needless to say i was disappointed, especially since by the time I got around to making this discovery, it was too late to return it..

but this thread got my mouth watering once again.. and led to me spending the greater part of last night getting a PC version of the game properly installed and working.. took me nearly 6 hours to get everything in order, including acquiring a program that would emulate a disk drive, and allow me to mount the games images, for the game to read..

i'm pleased to say it's now running.. and the best thing about it is that this is the director's cut, so i can now, for the first time, play Maria's scenario, "Born From A Wish"..
