I think some of you may be confusing linear with what you're referring to as "Metroidvania" (for those not understanding, cross between Metroid and Castlevania SOTN style) which allowed you to explore multiple areas from the beginning but you really couldn't progress unless you had certain key items. RE0, RE1, RE2, RE3, RECV, REOB, REOBFile2, and REDA all sort of had this style. You could explore some areas which would be open but you couldn't get to much further unless you had certain items. To a degree, RE4 allowed this but it wasn't as open as the earlier games. RE5 really didn't have any exploration and you couldn't even get to another area unless your partner was with you. I don't know if RE6 is going to bring some of this style back or not but it is what it is.

It's okay. Now I see that you were talking just about the games you were familiar with. And with most of them being relatively recent.

There is no need to get confused over it. A linear game is one that limits how you can solve challenges/problems (and it what order). Where most of what you can do in the game is fixed and you cannot stray away much from the preset path.

A non linear game usually provides you with a different set of challenges to get from point A to point B. And where you have the option to solve problems in a different order.

RE games have been pretty linear for the most part. Having "maze-like" maps or the backtracking doesn't change the fact that you rarely have more than just one way to solve a puzzle, unlocking a door or activating a cutscene in order to keep progressing through the game.

In my opinion, RE6 just needs to bring back the survival element, above anything else.

Capcom has pretty much promised this in Leon's scenario. Though to be honest, some of the Tall Oaks gameplay from the trailers looked pretty dang action-y to me. Hopefully we'll know more after E3 next month.

I hope this scenario is a long one. It would be depressing if it's just a couple of stages or that it ends just when you're getting into the groove of things. And only having two action-packed scenarios to look forward to.

BiohazardFrance has collected all of the various scans from across the net in one place:

So I'm sure this has already been brought up, but how do people hope (ha) the game is going to end? i.e. Where will the various characters end up? Alive? Dead? Disneyland?

Leon will join BSAA, cuz his work for US Secret Service is pretty much sealed after he killed the President. Chris will become a BSAA director. Jake will either join BSAA or will try to live a normal life without fighting. Sherry will stay in Secret Service and so will Helena. Piers will be promoted as the captain of his own BSAA team. Pretty much what I expected.

Mostly this, but I'd have Chris dying in the blaze of glory he deserves and by what I've seen of Jake he'd continue his life as a merc or die too.

Chris goes down fighting, leaves Piers in charge (And maybe tells him to look after Claire? Aww.). He also gives Jake words of wisdom about choosing his own fate, not letting his father's deeds overshadow his life blah blah blah. Real Ada shows up to take down Dark Ada/Carla. We find out she was kidnapped by the game's Big Bad (Simmons? Alex? The Organization?) and wasn't responsible for Carla's crimes. Leon resigns to avoid a scandal and finally walks off into the sunset with Ada. Helena dies (I don't know why I feel like she's marked for death. Probably because she reminds me so much of Luis.) Jake and Sherry go off on their own a la the end of Bourne Identity.

Or...what would be even better (but I know Capcom won't do this): Sherry discovers she was being manipulated by the Big Bad all along and wasn't going to be granted her freedom after the mission. She snaps and goes scorched-earth on the conspirators (remember that nigh-invulnerability thing Capcom keeps pushing?). She and Jake take over the Organization and tell the government and the BSAA to fuck off, thereby setting up the next game's conflict.

I don't think Leon technically needs to, or can, resign.

For all intents and purposes, he dies in Tall Oaks.

    The same goes for Helena.

This would actually be really interesting, if the whole "faked death" thing does go through permanently instead of just a quick fix to cover their asses until the end of the game. Leon and Helena would need new identities, Helena could no longer be a secret service agent, and I doubt joining the BSAA would be very inconspicuous for Leon; I bet a lot of people in the BSAA know who Leon is, and Chris and Jill alone couldn't cover his ass.

Regardless, there's no way this much thought and consideration is being put into the story, much less the ending/setting up characters for future games. Details like "what the characters will do now" won't even be addressed in the slighted.

It's really not that complicated how these characters can live on afterwards.

Hell, they may even just take the Rebecca/Billy/Barry route and that will be that. Problem solved.

Like I said, I'm more concerned about the gameplay. I can always watch the cutscenes on Youtube if that's all I care about.

Oh snap, that's right. It's probably just a convenient way to get Leon and Helena to China and will never be mentioned again. It's sad that we could do a better job with this stuff than Capcom.

But you have to admit that RE's soap opera elements are precisely why it has such a dedicated fanbase (and a surprisingly large number of female fans, at that.)

I think the reason many fans have difficulty with that kind of resolution is that Leon and Chris simply aren't the types to sit down and retire. It makes sense for characters like Rebecca and Barry to not continue the fight against bioterror. Billy, too, obviously, but for entirely different reasons. The same goes for Claire, even though she had a much bigger role in the overall plot than any of the above characters.

I also can't really picture Leon or Chris taking a desk job as a consultant, no matter how old they get. They're pretty much going to have to die on the frontlines. It's just who they are. Does this mean that I think we have to follow their respective storylines until they do? Not at all. In fact, I think Resident Evil 5's ending did an excellent job of providing this sort of resolution for Chris' character. We knew he was going to continue fighting, but we could leave him be without feeling a need to continue witnessing his battles.

Of course, then along came Resident Evil 6, and I think at this point, about the only option left is to kill him.

I don't know why some people aren't completely psyched for RE6. Sometimes I think people forget that, even if they never realized it, Capcom has always given them what they wanted in one fashion or another. RE1/2/3/0 All had improvements and refinements over the previous title that people were bitching about at the time. Personally, I remember many fans getting tired of the tank controls and camera angles (And many other fans who weren't) so they made RE4 that was a good balance between the two. People bawwed about that, How Ashley was so damn useless, how you had too much storage space. RE5 goes back to it's RE1 roots as far as storage and effectively gives "Ashley" a gun. People whine about that, calling him "Chris 'nine-pockets' Redfield", whining about how not being able to move and shoot is stoopid. Seriously, what we SHOULD be focusing on is the fact that (despite dubious translations) Capcom has released epically good titles consistently as far as RE is concerned. All of them have the characters we love, in a universe we've enjoyed for over ten years.

RE6 is going to be amazing, I don't care what the haters say. Anyone who is with me, raise your hand! We'll sit in the corner and anxiously await RE6 together. XD

Indeed. It's quite possible that table flipping may be in order.... But hopefully not. XD That's two people in the corner for RE6 awesomeness! Fair warning to newcomers, we only have two boxes of saltines and tap water for refreshments.
