Co-op being optional: as in playing with an AI or like it's a separate mode or the game changes when another player interacts as Carver?

Separate Modes - if you play on your own, there's no AI partner. The character doesn't even appear, as I understand it.
Yes Carver does appear in solo mode. If you play alone Carver will has a similiar role to Elle in DS2. But if you play in co-op mode, story will change and Carver will be Isiacs guide through the whole game.
Spoiler:
People can turn into necromorphs only in death by either 'infectors' or by having contact/certain degree of exposure with the 'Marker' (I think)...in Extraction he could have contracted the virus by having been stabbed by the huge crab-like necromorph and when he died in his sleep he could have just turned into a necromorph. It's the only reasonable explanation as to why he isn't mentioned, aside from the fact DS2 takes place 3 years after DS1, and why there was a necromorph in the space shuttle. Nathan was, after all, the only surviving human directly wounded by a necromorph.
Why mention him, it's been 3 years...Lexine & Gabe got married, are expecting a baby, and are moving on with their lives in DS2's storyline.
It's what makes the most sense.
Except he is doing fine and extremely unlikely to die. He passes over an offer to use a medkit and prefers wait to reach the sprawl, that is how well he was. Plus the game ends in Gabes perspective, it is completely disjointed with the rest of the game to suddenly switch characters perspective into a necromorph Nate for the ending. A necromorph infection does not kill someone either, it only affects the dead.
Another thing is the Necromorph shadow is fully developed, something not possible since Nate had lost a part of his arm, is no way the slasher could be fuly developed. Not to mention it is meant to take days for a dead body to change without aid of an infector.

Beanovsky Durst - "They are not pervs. They are japanese."
It's unsusual, but the Hunter was created by planting tissue from the bio-mass growing in the ship directly into a living brain. It was similar to a Slasher, and could re-grow lost limbs, so that might be somewhat like what happened here.
Mostly it's just a bit messy.
New info from Gameinformer:
Co-op confirmed
No competitive multiplayer in DS3
Now has universal ammo pickups
Cover system added
Unitologists pose a threat now,the screens look like they're shooting at isaac while hes taking cover
Co-Op will add new cutscenes and interactions between isaac and carver,"if you play single player you'll hear everything you need to hear to get the whole story."
"Dead Space 3 will have zero gravity space sections, dark corridors, and all the other things that made the series what it is"

I took the arm part into account, but when necromorphs are formed they grow limbs and their body go complete skeletal re-arrangement...the transformation could have just healed the severed arm.
The problem with Nate is that he wasn't well (severed-arm...and you're fine? REALLY!?), and should have taken that medkit when he had the chance...the moment he died is the moment he could have underwent the change...he was infected after all. Infectors are not the only way of infecting, they are human torsos that became Injectors which eased & sped-up the process of convergence.
Also, I think it was already made clear that the transformation process could be in a matter of hours. Once, the body starts changing its physical structure the process is almost instantaneous. If Infectors are the only way of infecting individuals, then it wouldn't explain how they came to be in the first place...since they're, after all, Human torsos. The reason why you see Infectors' victims turning into slashers only is due to pure laziness or lack of effort in the programming. All Necromorphs' types are formed depending on the situation and their surroundings. Some Necromorphs are formed out of several victims and not just one like the Slashers.
There has to be other ways to spread the virus like an STD or Contact with an open wound, not just through an infector.
The only reason I believe Franco turned into a Necromorph while half-dead at the beginning of Dead Space 2 is because he got pierced in the brain by an Infector.
Hmm...there's more to be learned about Necromorph convergence, hopefully in future titles they go more in-depth on how they're formed and see more types of Necromorphs in the middle of their transformation rather than just 'Slashers'.
Sounds good so far. Thanks for the info Aris.
EDIT:
Some more news from Gameinformer:
- New necromorphs: Fodder, feeders, and “the snow beast”
- Huge 30 story tall centipede necromorph named “Nexus”
- Feeders are “what happens when a human isn’t actually infected by a Swarm or by a Divider head, but by necessity ends up eating the flesh of a turned necro”
- Icy Planet is called Tau Volantis
- Fodder transform into two different necromorphs depending on how you kill them
- More plentiful ammo drops
- Team wants it to be less linear than DS1/2
- Explore large environments and find ”unique beta missions” that aren’t required to complete the main game

Spoiler:
It cannot do that. In Dead Space 1/2 if you find an area with dead bodies that will have infectors in it later try just shooting an arm off a corpse, later when it transforms into a slasher the Slasher will not have all of its appendages.
Yeah infectors just make the process instant, as the file shows it takes days without one.Infectors are not the only way of infecting, they are human torsos that became Injectors which eased & sped-up the process of convergence.
Beanovsky Durst - "They are not pervs. They are japanese."
I tried doing that in DS2 by stepping onto the dead bodies, hoping they wouldn't become slashers, and by some freaking miracle some of them did have their appendages all intact like if I never did anything prior to their transformation...just like how flawed DS2 is when it comes to carrying things with kinesis into other rooms and have them disappear out of thin air. If anything, that end scene in extraction was just a badly executed (more like an afterthought) cutscene and just used a generic 3D model of a slasher.
About the transformation taking days...they were probably wandering in space for days before they reached the Sprawl. I'm pretty sure that the physical/outward transformation w/ or w/o infectors is instantaneous, though...it just takes more time for the virus to do its internal work on a dead body without the assistance of an infector who would probably somehow inject a higher dose of the virus.
I would think the body would take a caccoon-like role in that the outside seems perfectly unchanged but the inner shell is suffering a massive change and eventually sprouts all at once revealing the change...kind of how Saddler just sprouts into a spider-like beast form from his humanoid form in a matter of seconds in RE4's end game.
Read the file please, it highlights in great detail why that theory is completely void of possibility.

Beanovsky Durst - "They are not pervs. They are japanese."
Do you have the link for that file?
I lent both DS1 & DS2 to my brother so I can't confirm...or is it in 'Extraction'?
Anyway, here's more in-depth info on Necromorphs as a whole. Very interesting read, takes me back to the 'Alien' universe. =D
http://deadspace.wikia.com/wiki/Necromorphs
It was linked a few posts up. http://deadspace.wikia.com/wiki/Recombination_Study
Beanovsky Durst - "They are not pervs. They are japanese."
What I can infer from this file is that the corpse undergoes no changes whatsoever until the third day (which is what this report covers) where the transformation is instantenous without the need of an infector (which would speed up the process with its huge doses of the yellow substance in the bladder...the disease/virus).
Nate could have just instantly transformed several days after his death on his way to the sprawl.
Anyway, this is just an observational report by in-game scientists...there could be more secrets yet to be revealed in future titles (DS3? Books? Animated movies?) of how Necromorphs are formed and more details of their origins. The convergence process may vary between hosts/organisms, including both the time it takes for the convergence process to achieve completion and result of what it can become (type of Necromorphs).
Your thoughts? =D

I actually thought the ending of Extraction was just a dream but since he wasnt in Severed and he has been offically announced as dead by the Ex Producer then thats pretty much the nail in the coffin (Pun intended) for me. I didnt really care to see any of them again anyway so its no biggie to me. I care about one man in that series and thats the guy who I have been through hell and back with twice! Extraction was more of a team effort and you didnt get the sense of being a certain person throughout the game because of all the interactions and character changes. The new guy I really dont like the look of, he is another action man looking tool. Issac is your everyday average Joe, we have gone from him being a mechanic to a bad ass Necro slaying machine.
Oh. Ok, crisis shuts down.

EA: Dead Space 1 and 2 were too scary
http://www.digitalspy.co.uk/gaming/n...y-says-ea.html
Whose feedback were they listening to? What kind of person buys a horror game then complains that it's too scary? The stupidity of this just hurts my head.
