Default Demon's Souls (PS3) & Dark Souls (PS3/X360/PC) Discussion Thread

I'm puzzled as to why no one has made a Demon's/Dark Souls Thread...or I just can't find one.

Anyhow, I decided to make a discussion thread because I've been playing the game for about two weeks now ever since I took a long break from it...then started Demon's Souls again, and after I was sick and tired of constantly playing it I had to go back to Dark Souls to play it again...it sure has been a while since I last played it.

The other reason as to why I made this thread is for the oncoming DLC 'Artorias of the Abyss' which I'm really excited for.

It'll be coming out exclusively (short-time exclusivity) for the PC version on August 24th, and it will be included with the PC version (free of charge).

Then it will be released for the console versions this Winter for (hopefully) a reasonable price...the DLC will contain balance tweaks, new items, new areas, new bosses & new story elements.

Another reason as to why I'm making this thread is about the 'lore' that surrounds 'Dark Souls', the lore is not just given to (you) the player but more like bits of cryptic information is given throughout all the items and dialogues in the game. It leaves a lot of room for interpretation, speculation & fascinating mystery to the game. Someone on Youtube has put together very in-depth videos that analyses a lot of the elements & writing of the game.

Since I can't put more than one embedded video per post, because of forum limitations I'll have to make double/triple/quadruple/infinite-posts...Sorry Mods. =/

Warning!: The following videos contain 'spoilers' about the game's items, locations, bosses & story. Watch at your own discretion! Recommended to only the people who already finished the game once.

Everyone is welcome to discuss away about anything related to both Demon's & Dark Souls!

    Last one!

Amazing videos, imo. Really does justice to the magical lore of 'Dark Souls'

I even went ahead to challenge myself and do things in the game a novice wouldn't normally do.

Just played Dark Souls for about two hours with a new character...was doing a few self-given challenges.

    - Managed to beat the Asylum Demon with the Broken Hilt Sword. Took me 17 min of long patience & 3 damage per hit...no deaths.
    - I was using a naked lvl 6 'Deprived' class character.
    - Went ahead and used the master key to grab a bunch of things early without leveling up at all and without touching 'Underburg' (first area)
    - I killed the Undead Dragon at 'Valley of Drakes'
    - Killed the Black Knight w/ Halberd in 'Dark Root Basin'
    - Killed 'Havel Rock'
    - Picked up the elite knight armor
    - Picked up the wolf ring
    - Picked up the red robes & the spell 'remedy' in 'Blighttown'
    - Picked up the 'Fire Keeper Soul' in 'New Londo Ruins'
    - and a few other minor things

...all in one go, not killing any bosses/mini-bosses & at level 6 (starting 'deprived' class level).

I'm pretty proud of myself. =D

There are not many parodies or animations of Dark Souls...at least not good ones.

I just found one, that's pretty funny.

WARNING!! DO NOT WATCH IF YOU HAVEN'T FINISHED THE GAME, IT CONTAINS SPOILERS & YOU WON'T GET THE JOKE.

Well, that's it for me...no more double/triple/quadruple posts.

Everyone is welcome to join the discussion (both Demon's & Dark Souls), don't be shy.

...Do not watch the above videos I posted, if you haven't finished the game at least once!

I'm playing Demon Souls for the 6th time at the moment and I just can't get enough. The game is easily one of the best I've played this gen.

Yeah, I imported Demon's Souls from Hong Kong before the game was released here in the UK. I absolutely loved the game to bits, couldn't put it down for about two months. The game is amazing and easily one of my favourite games in the past 10 years, probably my favourite PS3 game. I haven't been able to get money to buy Dark Souls yet but once I do I'm gonna binge on that game like no tomorrow. What do you guys hold on about Dark Souls? Better than Demon's or less awesome?

Shitty controls do not good challenge make. Nor does have an inability to pause game. Outside of the challenge these games are mediocre, and the main source of the challenge is bogus. Play a 3D Sonic game with one hand, great challenge due to bad controls, still not a great game.

Shitty controls? Since when? This doesn't even make sense. The challenge of the game comes within the trial and error it takes to defeat the varied enemies, and how one wrong move/mis-timed attack or dodge can spell death and the loss of all of your souls. It also has some of the best boss fights I've ever played. I feel like you just like to complain.

Always. They are slow and clunky, which leads into this...

Trial and error is also one of the shittiest forms of challenge to a game, because it isn't actually real challenge.

A game with good challenge gives you good, fast response controls and leaves it to the player to react to enemies as things happen, not so in Demon's Souls. Many things in the game you can only be aware of by dying to it previously, you need know what is going to happen often quite before it happens, the controls are too clunky and slow to react to things first time in many cases and you need be aware of what attacks will be used so can react earlier. It is as bad as watching a guide on youtube so you know everything to do first and how to prepare.

Your comments are as mediocre as your claims.

I've watched over many people that have played the game...I see different outcomes, some adapt and some don't.
I've seen newcomers get to the phalanx without dying, reading messages & watching their surroundings carefully (I wasn't as careful and I payed for it several times).

There are clearly parts of the games that are made to be visited later or need an amazing amount of effort if the player's hasn't honed their skills...it's that simple.

The game doesn't hold your hand...and does not make your character more powerful than other enemies, sometimes enemies are much stronger. It's not Devil May Cry, where the game holds your hand and makes the player super OP and encourages jumping into crowds of enemies without a care in the world. The game is about studying your opponents, whether it's their attack pattern/stamina/damage out put (as if it was a fighting game) as you carefully approach them.

The game HAS good controls, and there's no denying it. If the game it's not the type of game where you can just jump into crowds of enemies & come out unscathed, which is your cup of tea...then you've been playing the wrong game and your opinion is merely 'subjective'. Simple as that.

So instead of saying "these games are terrible/mediocre", just simply say "These games 'seem' terrible/mediocre in my opinion" or "I don't like these games, because I think they're terrible/mediocre".

If you can't adapt to taking the game one step at a time, and let impatience take over...the game will punish you! It will simply become trial and error...until you learn!

Simple as that!...it's just advice. You can take it or leave it.

Stopped reading here. If you want to start a post by making a personal attack when I discussed nothing but the game then you've deemed your post not worth reading.

I welcome any discussion of the game only from anyone else.

I'm not getting into this conversation with you...it goes nowhere really fast. I would recommend to keep reading what I wrote and not be such a hard-ass about it, stop picking on small things just to fight/complain about it.

I did not make a personal attack, just expressing my disapproval (opinion-induced) for your opinion on the game and went to explain the reason as to why I felt that way, that's all. Sorry if it seemed like I was making an attempt to do so.

I would really appreciate if you would rather discuss about the points I made about the game, don't mind the criticism in response...but let's not make something as off-topic as "you said this or that!" & "you personally attacked me!". If you really insist on going off-topic and talk about how I made a personal attack, I would appreciate to have the conversation off the thread and take it to PMs.

I didn't make the thread to go off-topic with this sort of nonsense.

    ---------------------------------------------------------------

    Anyway, back on-topic.

I wouldn't say Dark Souls is better/worse...just different. At first it may seem the better game because of how expansive the game world & content really are.

Later on, you'll realize (when you go back to replay Demon's Souls) that Demon's Souls has its perks over Dark Souls and some kind of charm to it....same for the other way around.

Btw, I also ordered the 'Hong Kong' version of the game to keep Demon's Souls online, after the sudden announcement of the NA servers shutting down (no longer happening; decision was overturned). I don't think I'll be going back to the NA version of the game unless it's co-op w/ a friend or someone from these forums/other communities. they seem to be pretty empty compared to the Asian version (Jap/Korean/Chinese servers) as well as I don't want to feel threatened again by another announcement of the NA servers closing.

The Hong Kong version seems to be the one with the least likely chance of closing down, since the game was published by 'Sony' in Asia. I don't know about the EU version, but I don't think it will last forever with 'Bandai Namco' having the publishing rights of Demon's Souls in Europe and Dark Souls worldwide...may seem to be the best course of action for them to close the servers sooner or later, in order to get more sales on Dark Souls. It would be beneficial for them from a business standpoint in my opinion.

Gradon. if you ever need any help/assistance in Demon's Souls let me know, whether it's Co-op or PvP.

Other than that, I would recommend getting Dark Souls...it's a really good game & slightly underrated at that as well!
