She was, but to a much lesser extent. Hell, Ada was more of a plot device than Sherry if you ask me. The latter is related to one of the most important characters in the series (I'll always maintain that Birkin and Wesker were more important to the series than the protagonists due to their roles in virus syntheses).

Billy was thrown into RE0 to give Rebecca a partner. Granted, this transition is not as forced as Sheva was on Chris (I remember the EX file in RE2 N64 mentioning Billy), but it's still obvious. The main attraction in RE0 is Becca, just like Chris in RE5.

Carlos was also a plot device for Jill, but it felt far less forced since the story was much better-written. A band of heavily-armed Umbrella mercs surviving in a city full of monsters is far more likely than zombie dogs attacking a van carrying a random military prisoner, with said prisoner escaping despite being handcuffed to something.

Ashley was the most obvious plot device, though. RE4 was the Leon and Ada chronicles; everyone else played second fiddle. The game was full of disposable one-time characters (even though I did like Luis). Since RE4 did so well commercially, Capcom decided to do a prequel featuring a popular RE4 character, expanding his role in the RE universe and giving RE4's story more meaning. I liked that. That does not mean, however, that I would want to see a prequel explaining how Sheva recognized Excella in RE5...

I only meant that RE5 is the best-selling RE game. This is how I envision Capcom execs interpret this info:

Exec 1: Hey guys, we should put Sherry in another game now that she's all grown up and...

Exec 2: Figures on RE5's sales are in... wow! It's outsold every other RE game!

      *applause*

      Exec 1: Anyway, about Sherry...

Exec 3: Give it a rest, Bob. No one knows who Sherry is, but based on this new evidence, they know Sheva! A new game with her would rake in millions!

Exec 2: You're a genius! Sheva's young and hot, and people love her! Let's get rid of Chris; he's boring and too old for our key demographic to identify with. Jill's cool, but she's practically a grandma! Can her.

Exec 1: Sherry's in her early 20's now; you could make HER sexy, too!

Exec 3: Do you honestly expect our new fans to dig through all those broken, boring, old RE games with the terrible angles for info on who Sherry is? My son told me it's really frustrating with the crappy controls. He'd much rather blast stuff mindlessly all day, with backdrops of explosions and excitement!

      Exec 1: *sigh*
      Mass production? Ridiculous!

It's a background plot line but it's still there, and frankly if people don't know who Sherry is then they aren't real fans of the series hence their opinion is irrelevant

On the plus side, she'd probably get a better reaction than if Capcom tried to bring in Alice. On the negative side, so would plans for the game being Hitler's attempt to redeem himself by sorting out biohazard outbreaks.

Looking at the new DmC, "real fans'" opinion is irrelevant to Capcom :/

Whenever there's an unknown female in a new RE game don't people automatically assume it's Sherry? I recall reading some people did it for Ashley n 4 and of course a bunch of people did it for Jill in 5.

I really won't hold my breath on ever seeing Sherry again. Oh she'll get mentions in fluff and the like but an actual new appearance? Very unlikely.

Sadly Sheva has the higher chance.

I would say we may have a decent shot at seeing Sherry in the next CGI film to be honest

Sherry and Sheva are likely to return.

Billy and Carlos should return but probably never will.

...and I'm still waiting for the EPIC cat fight between Ada Wong and Fong Ling!

Ada doesn't seem catty to me... She doesn't seem to be the type that'd get upset if someone else showed up wearing the exact same red dress.
