Not quite, it's Sony's own proprietary FAT and as such, getting a faster HDD or one with a larger cache doesn't do much. If you did get a 7200RPM one, don't worry, the heat sink in the system is pretty good. Someone tested that a while back and both 5400 and 7200RPM HDD's read similarly.

As many have noted, it's easy as pie to upgrade so the only issue on hand is whether you have a lot of data to back up to or not. I have a core 20GB that I got at launch and I needed to upgrade by April. I put a 160GB HDD and after 2 years, I've still got 80GB left (even with mandatory installs).
