Well, BioShock and Mass Effect are definitely better than Dead Space...but Homecoming and RE5? I don't think I've heard anyone say they were happy with Homecoming and as for RE5...at least Dead Space tried to be scary, and for many people it did the job. RE5 didn't even bother trying. I regularly get more intimidated by my daughters nappies. Now THAT is fear you can't forget.

I mean COD4 is the only other truly great game out.
I think Dead Space was quite possibly the greatest game this gen so far. I mean, what other game other than COD4 is possibly better than it?
RE5? MGS4? Uncharted? Resistance? Halo? Gears of War? World at War?There good but no where near as great as Dead Space.

Personally, I found RE4 to still retain plenty of the horror elements (and classic jump scares) of the earlier series entries and feel that Dead Space was about as scary as watching grass grow. On the flipside, you likely felt RE4 was a full-on action game and that Dead Space is a exemplary horror title, right? We'll have to agree to disagree on that point.
As for Homecoming; yes, I'm one of the few that felt it was a good Silent Hill game. Don't get me wrong; I disagree with the overusage of the movie's elements and Pyramid Head's fanservice status. However, it did accomplish what it needed to (in my opinion); it retained the most crucial aspects of the Silent Hill series whilst simultaneously putting a new spin on it and achieving something that hasn't been since the original RE: it was a true survival horror game.

But seriously, you honestly think Dead Space is better than any of those games? I can see Halo, because it's kind of bland at this point, and World at War, because it's still the same old WW2 setting.
Games in General this Gen that are better than Dead Space (and by a large sum in most cases):
Left 4 Dead
Gears 1 and 2
RE5 (I don't think it's that great, but it's certainly more entertaining than Dead Space)
RE:UC (You know a game's bad when a rail-shooter is more fun)
Mass Effect
Bioshock
Dead Rising
Super Mario Galaxy
Metroid Prime 3
Even the rather meh Turok game was better than Dead Space.
That's not even close to being all of them either.
Better Horror Games:
Condemned 1 and 2
Silent Hill: Homecoming
Some of those games I haven't played, but I still feel Dead Space is one of the best games this gen, and my personnel favorite so far.
I think Dead Space is one of those things were you either Love it or Hate it. Ive never seen anyone inbetween.

I must admit, I find it hard to see how people found Dead Space so...unscary. Especially comparing it to RE4 and RE5. In Dead Space you got ambushed, you got stalked by some truly nasty monsters, the enemies AI was interesting enough that simply finding a place to stand and shoot was not a viable tactic...you had to keep moving, you had to keep your eyes open, because the Necromoprhs could and would get behind you.
Plus the situation was creepier. You're trapped onboard a ship that's comming apart. You're being hunted by monsters that that are quite capable of shredding you, monsters that were once human and, of course in one case, babies jused as abase for the enemies. That one was a bit disturbing. And the story, as basic as it was, wasn't as bland and voring as RE4's where the biggest twist was, 'Ashley has been kidnapped...again!' or RE5's which went for High Drama but...well, it missed.
I think you're right. We're gonna have to disagree on that one.

As for the story; we'll really have to differ on that one. I enjoyed RE4's because it didn't always take itself too seriously. It kind of reminded me of Evil Dead II or Army of Darkness. Dead Space's story existed mostly through generic files that weren't even on the level of the most base RE or SH files. The game's files just weren't interesting.A man chooses...a slave obeys.

On topic: I found Dead Space to have: good story, great graphics, great enemies, great scares! and it wasn't linear but at the same time, the backtraking didn't feel boring. So, what do you get if you conbine that: a good horror game (maybe not survival horror, since you had a lot of ammo and... well... maybe it is a suvival horor game...). The thing is, I have it as one of my favourite games for Xbox360.... after Bioshock and maybe Gears 2 (or was Gears 2 on the third place... don't remember).
P.S.: by the way: SH:H isn't even near as good as dead space or... any other game I have.... no, waite! it's better that German World Cup and Army of Two (what a f****** game!!! I hate trailers, it LOOKED so good, and it's horrible!!!)

I was watching Tru Blood for some reason last night, (probably because I'm in love with Anne Paquin) when I noticed that a character's "demon possessed" mom is playing Dead Space on the wii, so it must have been the prequel that's coming out. I really want to play it, even though there's a 99.9% chance it end badly for the character that you play as lol. Anyone else getting that badass Isaac figure? I want the bloody varient if I decide to get it.

If you don't like or find the idea of space or sci fi scary. Then your not going to like Dead Space. I find it immensely scary though, and I love sci fi. So yeah I was bound to love the game.

They have a "bloody" variant but there's hardly any blood visible, hopefully the finished product will look a bit better. If not, like you said it shouldn't be too much of a challenge. Personally I would like to see a necromorph myself.

As for Dead Space...that game had so much more atmosphere than RE4. Sure, it may not have been as much fun concerning the guns-a-blazing, but then again, RE4 had massive amounts of weapons, ammo, etc. In Dead Space you are an engineer-by-trade using tools, not some over-trained cliched U.S. Secret Agent who can perform numerous feats of agility that also defy the laws of nature.
Dead Space owes RE4 for the gameplay, style, etc. But it is a far better, deeper story which trumps anything RE4 has except for fun factor. And I'd rather have Isaac's bland personality than Leon's ridiculous one. God, I can't even believe you said that any RE game has a deeper story than Dead Space. In Dead Space, EA Redwood created an entire religion, spacecraft, somewhat meaningful characters (everyone felt for Isaac concerning Nicole; Hammond & Kendra were enjoyable; even the engineer Jacob searching for his doctor girlfriend); there were audio logs, text logs, graffiti, etc all that added to the story. So much more than most RE games. And your cream of the crop, RE4, has easily the worst story/depth in all of the RE franchise. I think even the original Super Mario Bros has a deeper story than RE4's shitstack of a tale.
Each opinion will vary on what is scary, but Dead Space is much more of a survival horror game than RE4 or RE5.
I doubt anyone will say that RE4 is scary whatsoever. As for your "oven man" event being scarier than anything in Dead Space - that is just a pure laugher. Oven man posed no threat whatsoever, not to mention that it was about 3 seconds of a BOO! reaction. Anyone with a modicum of common sense knew beforehand that something was in the oven.
In Dead Space the first appearance of a necromorph is much more intense, followed by the invincible monster pursuing you, followed then by the first attack from the necromorphed military soldiers (the super fast ones). Those 3 things are more intense & nerve-wracking than anything in RE4 save the sound of Dr. Salvador's chainsaw.
I'd be surprised in even the haters of Dead Space could sit here and tell me RE4 or RE5 are scarier, with a straight face.Last edited by Jill's Boob; 08-29-2009, 10:12 PM.
