  • A plant thought to be extinct for 2,000 years sprouted from a preserved seed.

Scientists in Israel managed to coax plant growth from ancient Judean date palm seeds! The seeds were discovered at an archaeological dig in Masada, the site of an ancient Jewish desert fortress, and have been dated (excuse the pun!) at around 2,000 years old.

The plant, nicknamed Methusaleh after an extremely old dude in the Bible, grew to at least 4 feet tall. The researchers hope that the date palm can be used to revive old forms of medicine thought to have been lost for ages.
