I didn't particularly think RE4 was any easier than other RE games (except for maybe Outbreak). I definitely died more in RE4 than in the other RE games, but that was because I would often let myself die if I was performing poorly thanks to the frequent checkpoints. I think it's our habits and mindsets as Resident Evil vets that made RE4 easier than it would be for newcomers; we're used to exploiting tactics that result in less ammo and supply consumption for example. I think it's pretty cool that skills established from past RE games still matter in RE4 (and 5 probably) where the gameplay is vastly different.
I don't think RE5 will be extremely easier or harder than RE4, but RE5 will have three starting difficulties plus an unlockable fourth difficulty (professional) so I know many RE veterans (including myself) will be starting on the hardest available difficulty (and hopefully it will deliver).
