  • Saving the modified RE 2 Characters!

What do you think? Why must Robert Kendo die in RE 2?
In RE 1.5 he survived the Horror with Elza Walker but in RE 2 he only gets a underpart. Why?
Why did Capcom modify some of the RE Characters like Robert Kendo or Chief Irons??
In RE 1.5 Chief Irons was a good one,but in RE 2 he is a bad guy.
    what is your opinion?

RE 2 should have had Kendo's Sandwich Shop and a hungry zombified Barry.

They dropped several features from 1.5, including some apparently quite long sections with a second character escorting you (maybe three, with Marvin, Leon and Ada, and Kendo, Sherry and Claire) so Kendo simply got reused as the gunshop lunch meat.

As for Irons...I dunno. Since the story changed from Umbrella collapsing to no one believing the S.T.A.R.S team they must have decided that the chief of police needed to be in on it, to lessen the impact of the accusations.

It is thought that Marvin and Kendo were both characters that could die, depending on your actions, in the same fashion as Rebecca and Barry from RE1. Possibly Ada (Linda) too.

I believe there wasn't much to Chief Irons, and he became more important in RE2...however, it is worth noting that the FMV for 1,5 was created and recycled for RE2, and so the gunman on the roof in the B scenario that looks remarkably like Irons may well have been his original fate.

It works similar to RE1. Leon, Marvin, and Linda (Ada replaced this character in retail) could all live in his scenario and escape, or one of the other sub-characters could die or both could die, depending on your action and choices. Similarly with Elza, John (not Robert Kendo, John is pretty different) and Sherry could survive and escape, or John could die depending on your actions.

Chief Irons was a good guy in 1.5, but he was wounded most probably either during or before the opening fmv and is laying on the couch in his office. Leon's first order of business once you start the game is to report to Irons about what happened during the opening fmv. The cop in retail RE2 who accidentally shoots down the helicopter may resemble Irons slightly of retail, but in 1.5 Irons was more bald and had gray hair (and wore a full dark-blue uniform) so I'm pretty sure there's no connection.

As for why they killed off the characters, that's easy to answer. In an interview after the scrapping of 1.5, the developers pretty much stated there were too many characters alive and they got rid of characters not really needed for the new plot.

That's interesting. Where did this info come from? Any details as to what was in the FMV?

It is confirmed Leon starts on the helipad, and brief story details seem to indicate the reason is because Leon does not arrive in time, or something happens to a rescue team and leaves Leon stranded. It's at this point from the Complete Disc video 1 that Leon does his famous line "well that's just friggin great, now what am I gonna do?" and the game starts. After stepping off the helipad onto the stairs to go back down into the police station, there is an Inflames' screenshot which shows Leon with some text which translates roughly to "I have to report this to the chief.". Considering how the developers complained after scrapping the game that it resembled RE1 a lot, I imagine this kind of scene was pretty similar to RE1 when pretty much in the beginning of the game something happens and your character decides to (or in the case of Jill, says it) report back to Wesker in the hall.

The general idea of 1.5 is that Leon had been working for the RPD for a couple of weeks prior to the incident, and story details from various sources cite that the survivors were mostly holed up on the top floor of the RPD waiting for rescue. At the time of the beginning of the game, the RPD police technically has a number of survivors, including Leon, Marvin, Roy, and Chief Irons. Neither Roy nor Irons seem to last long though.

Thanks Alzaire, that's a lot of cool info. I thought the reason Leon was saying "that's just friggin great" was because of the two crates blocking the far end of the helipad.
