Adding all the melee and all the word from people saying ammo can actually run out might be Capcom's way of trying to balance the ammo and melee, which is great if we aren't bombarded with ammo, we might actually need to take the risk and go over and get close to the enemies.
And of course if the enemies can do some serious damage with their attacks it would add that tension and fear of getting inc lose to save our ammo.

. That would have made for some great gameplay, similar to the original RE5 and it's water-drinking/hallucination/heatwave system that never came to light in the final release unfortunately.
