Quite a few wheel chair bound people can swim. It's pretty good physio, especially if you have partial use of your legs.

Otacon said in MGS2 that his father killed himself because the grief over Otacon sleeping with his wife(Otacon's stepmother) was too much for him to bear. No matter what way we look at this right now, it seems like a retcon. I'll wait for the game to come out before I make a final judgment, though.
