I know everyone is different Mark, but that could be said for anyone. It's like how a lot of black folk can say "'Sup nigga?" and it's deemed alright, but if a white person said "Hello nigger", there would be some raised eyebrows. I don't generally get offended at much, and I know transvestites who refer to themselves as "trannies". But there are a number of different "trannies" and transvestites differ to transgendered people, and so on. A lot of transgendered people find "tranny" offensive because it's not referring to them for who they really are. It was also the assumption that he looked like a "gay bald dude" and this was somehow a bad thing, and using "gay" as an insult. Within certain social circles it's accepted from people who are known as LGBT alllies, but the majority of my gay/trans friends (and I know a hell of a lot), would be insulted if some random said "You look so gay" and then went off insulting people's behaviour calling it "gay".

I wasn't so much offended at the initial post, I was just informing him not to use gay as an insult. It was the second post where the dude seemed to believe it his right to use the word 'gay' to insult folk and that such matters of LGBT rights shouldn't concern anyone because we should just "be a man" about stuff. Even then I wasn't offended, more flabbergasted that someone could have such an opinion. But, meh, whatever. It's getting off topic now anyway. (Not that this topic really HAS a topic to begin with)

Caring about discrimination isn't exclusive to women and saying that "being a man" is not caring about society, the issues within society etc is likening the male gender to a bunch of neanderthals. Which they aren't. You don't have to be talking about homosexuality to use the word "gay" in a derogatory fashion. I 'get' what you're saying, but it doesn't apply to every LBGT person. For example, some would prefer to be identified as gay/gender-queer/whatever, but will say such things as, "That's so gay", or "Look at the tranny".

It's not offensive, to everyone. ;P ...but people are different from one another, I know that it can be hurtful, etc., but obviously, it's offensive, in this case.
