  • That's great, I haven't seen a bad review of Star Trek yet. I just need to steal the money to see it now.

Just watched Master Of The Universe. I love the goddamn film, I'd choose MOTU over Star Wars any day.

Tons of action, lots of character development and I though they tied it in with the old series very well.

              • I saw it last night, and, while I certainly enjoyed it more than I expected considering it was directed by J.J. Abrams, I think IGN hit the nail on the head when they called it "Star Trek for Dumb People."

This is not to suggest the original series was particularly intelligent (though the subsequent films were far more in my opinion), but there were some serious Capcom-sized leaps in logic in this film that bugged the heck out of me. And while I enjoyed the various in-jokes and nods to the original series, there was a tad too much shtick for my tastes, with a lot of it completely unnecessary (Kirk's inflated hands and Scotty beaming into the water coolant system come to mind).

I thought that the whole nonsense with the "red matter" was dumbed down technobabble, but it's a fantastic way to bring in new fans to the franchise. That's what I think this film has done, it's done for Star Trek what Casino Royale did for James Bond. It's rebooted the series, and it'll bring in new fans as well as catering to the old school fans. I'm a die hard Trekkie, I have been for over 15 years now, and I enjoyed the film immensely. There was great characterisation, some nice in-jokes thrown around and beautiful special effects. I liked the opening sequence in particular, almost brought a tear to my eye when I heard the sounds of the newly born Kirk entering the world.

Moment I saw that redshirt descending with Kirk and Sulu to the drill platform, I already knew he was dead. He was dead before he even left the shuttlecraft. He was dead the moment he woke up in the morning in his quarters and thought, "You know, red seems like a nice colour to wear today."
                      See you in hell.

I probably could have made this clearer in my original post, but while IGN was comparing the new movie to the original series (and the following series and movies as well, I imagine) when they called it "Star Trek for Dumb People," I didn't quite mean the same thing. They were likely referring to the lack of technobabble (which was actually a plus in my book), but that's not what I meant.

Perhaps "Dumb People" was too strong of a term, because the film itself was not particularly unintelligent. What bothered me about it was the poor storytelling methods they used to get from plot point A to plot point B. There were several cases where it felt as if they couldn't figure out how to logically move from A to B, so instead they just said, "Bam! We're already there!"

Also, every time Chekov spoke, I wanted to take a power drill to my left temple.
