This was a really hard list to compile. When not writing/playing music of my own, I am almost always listening to that of someone else. I have never been a 'background music' kind of guy, because music is a very spiritual thing for me and is something I try and experience in every facet. Music is the closest thing in my life to a religion, and will be until the day I die. The music I like I love. To me, music is life. Anyway, after much thought, I think I'm going to go with these:

                  1. Sunshine Lies - Matthew Sweet / Innuendo - Queen
This was a really hard choice that ended up being impossible. These albums are both extremely precious to me for many reasons; Personally and artistically. Every time I listen to either of these albums, I hear something new. They're both perfectly written, arranged, performed, and produced. They are both absolute divinities. The themes of love and nature on Sunshine Lies speak to my core, while the themes of mortality and longing on Innuendo conjure thoughts of what my future may hold. Funnily enough, Back of My Mind from Sunshine Lies, and The Show Must Go On from Innuendo are both tied for my favorite song ever.

                  2. Full Moon Fever - Tom Petty
My mother bought this for me 15 years ago, and it's still a staple. I listen to it all the time; It never loses it's charm. Tom Petty is an amazing songwriter, and has been a hero of mine since I was a child. I've never heard a song by him I didn't like. Zombie Zoo, baby.

                  3. In Reverse - Matthew Sweet
Simply put; This album is a masterpiece. Production-wise, it is a throwback to the old Phil Spector 'wall of sound' approach, while the songwriting is classic Matthew Sweet. The last track, Thunderstorm, is worth the price of admission alone. Another amazing album from a truly gifted songwriter.

                  4. Altered Beast - Matthew Sweet
I am a pretty depressive person by nature (bipolar disorder's a bitch)... lucky for me, so is Matthew Sweet! This album is very moody, but in all the best ways! It has a song for every mood, and they're all great. Someone To Pull The Trigger is achingly wonderful.

                  5. Wildflowers - Tom Petty
Tom Petty is, in my opinion, one of the best American songwriters of all time. This, his second solo album, cements those feelings further. Wildflowers has some of my favorite songs ever written, and I only grow fonder of them over time. Great, great record. It's almost impossible for me to pick a standout track, because they're all amazing.

                  6. Kimi Ga Suki * Raifu - Matthew Sweet
There's no surprise that I have a few of his albums on this list, because he is my biggest musical hero. This album was made as a 'thank you' to his Japanese fans for their ever-present, hardcore love, and was (originally) released there exclusively. This is also his first independently produced album; Recorded in his home in just two weeks, which is pretty impressive when you take the quality of the songs into account.

                  7. A Night at The Opera / A Day at The Races - Queen
I've always really counted these albums as a double-album... only the halves were released a little over a year apart as opposed to in the same package. Everything about them was executed perfectly. Together, they may well be Queen's finest hour (or rather hour and a half).

                  8. Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere - Neil Young
Man... what to say? Neil is a God, and this album is his Genesis. "In the beginning, Neil created perfection..."
Though his second solo album, this is really where all of the Neil Young trademarks started. Cinnamon Girl, Down By The River, and Cowgirl In The Sand; All amazing... and that's not to take away from any of the other tracks which are also great! The furious lead and rhythm guitars on this album remain some of the best ever recorded.

                  9. Excitable Boy - Warren Zevon
Ooo, MAN! What a crazy awesome record! Warren has such a unique way of writing a song. His lyrical sense is absolutely amazing. Again, every song on this album is perfect. I'm sure everyone here knows Werewolves of London, yes? That's just one of the many great songs on this record. Warren is one of the greatest losses in music. He is sorely missed!

                  10. River of Dreams - Billy Joel
Billy is one of the most misunderstood artist I can think of. People are pretty quick to pigeonhole him into 'soft rock', but the truth is, he can actually REALLY rock. No Man's Land and Shades of Grey on this album prove that in spades. That said, not all of the songs on this disc are rocky. There are some wonderful ballads and a little blues. Released in 1993, this is the last pop record from Billy Joel (most likely ever). If it DOES prove to be his last, it is a great note to go out on.

                  Thanks for bearing with me!

It REALLY is. If this were a top fifteen albums...
According to Brian May, Freddie Mercury wrote that riff on an acoustic guitar and played it with 100% down-strokes (Ogre Battle, that is).

I can't do a top ten. If I did then #10 would have been a 20-way tie or something. Here are some of my favorites though.

                            Rolling Stones - Aftermath
                            Love - Forever Changes
The Velvet Underground - While Light White Heat
Cocteau Twins - Head Over Heels
Felt - Poem of the River and The Splendour of Fear
                            Beach House - Devotion
                            Pixies - Doolittle
                            Radiohead - The Bends
