My wife and I watch hentai sometimes when we want to laugh, since bar one or two exceptions hentai is universally pretty bad. And because I'm a bad, bad man I keep acp[y of Urotsukidōji that I 'lend' to people whenever they go on about how anime is kids stuff, its just cartoons. They tend to change there mind somewhere around the third demon rape scene followed by the women getting torn in half.
Which is why I refuse to look hentai up on the internet. Fucking guro. For those of you that don't know what guro is, well, you likely don't want to. It involve dead and dying people. Nasty, nasty stuff. As my friend puts it, 'Nothing kills a solid erection as fast as guro.'

Back in the mid-90s, there was a tiny boom in the anime market here, mostly thanks to Ghost in the Shell's international release. So a lot of old and new material was harvested in from left 'n right (Dominion Tank Police, The Guyver, Castle of Cagliostro, Project A-ko, Akira, Fist of the North Star, Detonator Orgun, Tenchi Muyo, etc., just to name a few. Previously we'd had stuff like Robotech, Galaxy Express, Silverfang, etc.), and for some reason, amidst it all was also Urotsukidōji... they seriously managed to "cover all bases" when they picked stuff to put on shelves here (the efforts of Manga Entertainment, that is) and there were those of us who gobbled up almost anything that hit the shelves back then... I seem to recall this entire experience going something like:
(Man, there were some nice and hilarious convos in a local anime IRC channel a good 10-ish years ago. Mostly stories told by people who worked in a store that specialized in various anime imports and stuff at the time... stories of parents making the Anime == Pokemon, by default, connection and such... good times.)
Random Trivia: Having always been the "go to guy" for lot of things, I sometimes tend to keep a lot of messed up stuff that I can throw at people "if needed". Back in the days before "internet for everyone!!!", I was once approached by someone seeking porn... I gave them the pride of my junk pile... a German "Gold Shower" movie
(I dunno what disturbed me the most... the movie itself, or the fact that the people I threw it at watched the entire thing and kept asking me questions about specific scenes later... )

Of course, I tend to not like real porn either. I've been on the net too long and seen too many things that turn my stomach.

There are some great mature (non porn) titles out there. Some people want just movies, so typically I'll tell them Perfect Blue is good. Hayao Miyazaki also does some brilliant works. And for anyone that hasn't seen Grave of Fireflies, I'd strongly reccomend it. Gunsmith Cats was always a fave of mine when I was younger too.Last edited by Bertha; 09-01-2009, 07:40 PM.sigpic

One of the biggest stores around here that sells anime FYE, and they sell their 18+ anime right next to the regular stuff, so naturally when most people see half a section covered with black covers, they think that most of what is out there is porn.sigpic

And yes...guro is sick. I don't know how people can argue that it and some of the other very heavy, nasty fetishes are artistic.

And yeah, I own Grave of the Fireflys (and every other Ghibli, for that matter) and it's one of the best World War II stories around, showing the effect of the war of the Japanese civilians. I hear they're doing a live action version but focusing on the aunt's family, showing how the war drove her from being a kind women into the person she was in the movie, and how the events of the film (I won't spoil it for you if you haven't seen it) affects them.
And Perfect Blue is good too. I had to watch it a couple of times before I was sure what was going on, and not because it's badly told. I always love a story that complicated.
