Mass Effect 2 Hype

Bought this on Monday and haven't put it down since. My entire opinion can be summed up with one image:

Amazing game so far.

I'm also very pleased to see that I've passed the play time of the first game by about five hours and there's still plenty left for me to do.

In ME1 I could do everything (including collecting all those stupid minerals, tags etc) on all my playthroughs in about 30 hours. Here, it took me about 46-47 hours to complete the game with all missions and all upgrades. :]

Odd, I did every sidequest (literally, every last one of them), explores 100% of all planets, finished the game with the best possible ending and I clocked in 27 hours total. I didnt even rush it. It was close to the same result, or a bit over 30+ hours and I didnt do all the Mako missions.

Really? I only clocked in around 16 hours for both of my Shepards, although I only did the majority of the side missions.

I'm curious about the entire Mass Effect thing. Does one need to play the first game in order to fully enjoy the second? Or can I just jump straight in? I've heard good things about the games.

Its one of those games where you need to play the first game as the game has a substantial background story which just cant be shortened up for newcomers. But the good thing is that the first game is very enjoyable, isnt outdated and the savefiles carry over to ME2, which adds a few perks to ME2.

Everybody lived. Nobody died. Well I'm a little bit of a completionist so I did almost everything before getting the IFF. So I saved Yeoman Chambers, who was a bit too clingy after the end of the game. Oddly, romancing her did not destroy my relationship with Liara. It was a good game, though some aspects I did not like. I loved the variety of armour/weapons from Mass Effect 1 as well as the overheat. Though Mass Effect 1's sniper rifles were a bit useless because of it. I prefered Mass Effect 2's characters and some of the missions were a lot better but I did miss exploring planets in my dune buggy. Oddly I seemed to get many bugs during play. The number of times my female shepard would aquire something and the male shepards voice played was annoying. Several times my weapons never reloaded even though I did the reload, and Joker got stuck on the stairs in engineering. Both 1 and 2 were good and I look forward to 3 (but it better come out soon, only a few years left with the 360 as its comming up to 5 years old). But both mass effect 1 and 2 lack incentive to play through again for me, well 2 has a bit more than 1. I'm finding that a lot with games these days.

savefiles carry over to ME2, which adds a few perks to ME2.

Notably that you start with 5000 of each material, 100000 creds, need to only complete the game once for the long service medal (says 2 plays of mass effec 2 or start from a Mass effect 1 chararacter), also your Renegade/Paragon status sort of carries over, it allows you to do them without building up the points again, amking some interesting cutscene alterations.

So, I'm finished with all the loyalty missions and when I next go on the game I'll be ready to use the Omega 4 Relay. Exciting stuff.

If you picked any mission after your crew was captured, that wasnt going through the relay, then most of Normandys crew will be gone

Thats because Zombie fred only left one mission after the Reaper IFF and thats Legions loyalty mission, which you get after Reaper IFF, the crew gets abducted right after that one mission. The whole point is that once you do the "certain special quest" with a sidecharacter, after Normandys crew gets abducted, you have to go after the Collectors without doing any missions. If youve completed everything before Reaper IFF mission, then the only sidequest you will have left after you do the Reaper IFF is Legions loyalty quest, and thats the only mission youll be given time for.

tl;dr - The only "one more" quest you can do is Legions loyalty quest, so have everything done before you do the Reaper IFF

I ended up finishing the game last night - wow. That entire final mission was excellent. And I managed to get through it all without anyone dying, so I'm quite pleased. I thought Miranda was about to do, but I don't know, she got a cramp or something?

The Human Reaper was very interesting. And that ending!
