lol space herpies looks a lot worse than normal herpies its probably just to advertise how much tougher the battles in this game are going to be and how dangerous the missions are going to be. Or maybe you can get scars in Mass Effect 2 like you did in Fable 2

First I thought scars and damage would carry from battles like Fable when you are KO'd, however considering you get shot at ALOT, it wouldn't make sense all our Shepards would look like they had one close shave too many.

Possible Geth viral infection similar to Saren like Alexia said, with Shepard becoming more like the geth as the story carries on depending on your choices etc, most probably one of the bad endings which won't carry to Mass Effect 3.

Either that or he banged Subject Zero.

The combat gameplay looks a HELL of a lot better than it was in the original.

Damn...I still gotta beat that game.

I know it was a Halloween thing but I don't think they'd have mutilated him just for Halloween. I'm sure it means something and has relevance to the game.

Probably related to one of the possible outcomes where Shepard can actually DIE.

That begs the question, does this mean ME3 is going to have a new lead anyway ? since it wouldn't make much sense for them to plot this complete ending with shepard dying and then completely ignoring it in ME3

No, it's gonna be Shephard again, but if you get his ass killed you won't be able to port the game to ME3 and continue with 'your' Shephard.

Which is something of a wallbanger unless the new Shepard is some sort of relative or something.

You'll still be Commander Shepard, just not the one you played ME1 and 2 with, you'll be required to make up a new one from scratch, especially when you consider ME3 probably takes place soon after 2, not decades after, and Shepard on 2 out of 3 of his ME1 origins was orphaned anyway, even his Spacer origin only states his mother is alive

But story wise it wouldn't make sense for a completely new Shepard to come into play after the "Original" dies. Gameplay wise it works but it's annoying when you look at the story overall if the new Shepard isn't in some way connected to the "Original".

It would be like if the main character of a series of books died halfway through the series and then a new character with exactly the same name was introduced to finish the series off. I guess there could be ways to handwave it if the new character wasn't connected to Shepard at all, likeusing his name as a title or making the new character actually a new character that is just finishing off what Shepard started but starting the third game with an entirely new Shepard just wouldn't work storywise.

But perhaps I am overthinking it and they've thought it all out. It's just really bugging me.

For me the scenario when Shepard could die will be a "what if" scenario; something like in RE series - in RE1, when you play as Jill, you can kill off Rebecca, Chris and Barry, but in RE2 you know that all of them survived the mansion incident.
