Randomwab managed to play through it in Japanese. All story dialog is voiced (in English) + some side-story/bonus cutscenes are too. But all description text, subtitles and non-voiced NPC dialog is in Japanese.

It's probably not too hard to play in Japanese, but if you can find a guide of some sort (or aren't too afraid of exploring the menus a bit on your own), then it's probably very easy.

I'm tempted to import the Japanese PS3 version but it sounds like it's a very 'story driven' game. Would the game be playable/ worthwhile for someone who can't read Japanese?

There was also some... uh... crap... I forgot which site it was, but one that lists various game info (title, ratings, release countries, etc.) that had it pinned down for Europe in September too.
