    It's generally accepted that the franchise has been run deep into the ground by both the films and what Capcom is doing themselves, right? Ever since CV, we've been going in this direction of superhuman and over the top action movie fluff that has progressively worsened with each sequel. They've retconned plot pieces and revamped looks of characters with each of the last few titles to the point where characters are unrecognizable from their origin. With Mikami having been out of the picture since 4, it seems Capcom has no shame in what they're doing anymore. So, I don't think they'll step back and take a breath to bother with honoring the series in a reboot. They're too arrogant now. RE6 just seemed like they were saying "we can make a game like this, too."

    Since it's being panned by critics, I doubt they'll go back to the old roots without trying to take a shot at this type of game again. Especially since they re-invented the wheel with such success in RE4.

    If they did start over, though, the reboot would mean the old games in the style of 5 and 6. Would you really want to see Chris Redfield punching boulders in the RE1 courtyard? It's arguable that none of the creative decisions Capcom has made this generation - for any of their franchises - have been wise. I'd rather just have them put the series to rest, but we know that won't happen.

    I have no faith in them being able to pull off another REmake. Maybe if we had the return of Mikami to the development team, they MIGHT be able to do it. Maybe if 1.5 was leaked and there was LOTS of hype around it (you know it wouldn't get lots of hype, though) Capcom would take their heads out of their butts. Maybe if there was an industry crash..

    ..or maybe, just maybe, if game critics and fans alike really do start admitting and being more vocal about being sick of playing these same types of boring games. Maybe then the world of survival horror can rise from it's grave.

    Series needs to be rebooted. Sorry newsbot, I know you're against this and you love archiving everything and keeping up with the series when new stuff comes out...but its time they went back to raccoon city and went back to the original games premise, start off small and rebuild.

    Capcom doesn't have what it takes to keep the series special anymore, the story choices they keep making prove that.

    The could do an amazing remake of the original game, even better than the 2004 GC game if they started over and went back to the series roots.

    There is still an incredible amount of potential with this setting and a chance to add more depth to the series with a clean slate, rather than the continuous mediocre sequels that just dont seem to stop .

    Peruse just about any RE fan forum (like this one) and you'll find better ideas for gameplay, plot and character development than what Capcom comes up with.

    In short, here's what CoD4 essentially did; Took UT/Q3 and brought it down to earth. (As for being out of the loop; at that point in time - I was pretty much sitting at the center of it.)

    As for RE6; it's doing exactly the same as Capcom's been doing with a lot of other games lately (sadly without the same acceptance other devs and titles have managed to achieve with similar approaches to messing with the trends/genres). This basically boils down to the expecations thing, as you mentioned. People want to be able to easily categorize things. If they can't; they're confused. They don't have time to learn and they don't want to learn. Would you like to have to retake your driving lessons every time you wanted to use a new/different car?

    Subject of interest on the front of people and their inability to face challenges would be the recent dev talk about the focus testing of Dishonored. People literally just putting down the controller 'cause the game didn't hold their hands and tell 'em what to do and people not doing specific things 'cause someone in the game told them not to. Sheep.

    Anyway, the funny thing about modern day game reviews is that you often find the more positive reviews of non-traditional games within non-gaming publications that don't really do a whole lot of game stuff. Are the people easily impressed? I don't think that's it. I think it's just that they're not as biased or affected as much by the whole "This is good/bad, 'cause that guy says so" and thus more likely to actually form their own opinion on it. +Them not burning through several "generic" games a week makes them more likely to actually invest some time into a "new challenge" and also tend to find it interesting to try out new/different things - rather than just expecting their next "shooter" to be a glorified mission pack to whatever they're usually playing.

    In terms of what COD had become in the FPS market, going modern was a huge step. But not because of the setting alone, going modern allowed the developers to utilize a shitload of creative freedom, expand on options and gameplay, which they did. COD4 can be compared to Half Life. From one side, you can look at it as a game which didn't create anything "brand new", as many people just *love* to point out when they try to prove their taste is better just because they like things noone does, for the sake of it. Anyway, perks were done before, usually known by "loadout" (mhm), weapon attachments aswell, the list goes on. Throwing all of those new (to COD) aspects into a COD game, yet still keeping the feel and flow 100% COD, is what made the game revolutionizing. Amidst all the franchises with identity crysis', COD in 2007 was one of the few which changed and improved tremendously, without sacrificing anything it was built on.
    Level design and balance, gametype balance, weapon balance, moddability, amazingly reliable netcode, and then a shitton variables thrown in, without breaking any of those.

    As for marketing, COD4 was seriously modest compared to some of its competitors, and certainly a blip on the radar compared to what MW2 and even the first Black Ops did. You seem to be a bit confused with this one, but considering this happened 5 years ago and the game probably never interested you past the rather simplistic SP (even though it just reeks of Clancy meets Bay, it still has more substance than a whole bunch of celebrated titles in 2007 and beyond)

    The end result? Majority of COD fans take COD4 as a valid sequel, sinking as many hours into the game as was done with the predecessors. It achieved everything RE4 did, without ripping the community apart.

    If you're having issues with figuring out what the game did right, then you appear to have been out of the loop, there are limited to no technical flaws with the game with the exception of not having been able to cater to every conceivable colour on the taste pallet.


    Is it a bad game? Not really. I think RE6 can be used as a prime example of what's basically WRONG with the current day review system. You know, where a game is either a 10/10 top or a total flop. While no one could probably justify giving it a top score, you'd have a lot of explaining to do if you gave it a notably low score; considering all the stuff you're likely to've previously given a better score.
    It has to do with expectations. With the flow of information, games becoming a consumer item with as much value as a banana, you can easily expect the whole scale to bog down to "yay" or "nay". People have much more to compare the game to, and they have a lot more options if the game is not satisfactory. And if the game, part of a franchise sailing on the praise boat for the past 7 years, does not deliver, one would be smart to take off the fanboy shades and see things in a broader view. An AAA title in modern days has serious flaws if it doesn't receive uniformal praise.

    If the game had been more environmentally open and allowed the player to explore, and had far less annoying QTEs (which never consist of good gameplay), it would have been much better. The level of content is amazing, but quantity is not as important as quality to me.

    I think this game could really benefit from an extra, non-timed side mode like RAID. I'm only starting chapter 4 of Leon's campaign, but thus far it seems that the campaigns will not be as replayable as they were in 4 or even 5. It's just too mind-numbingly linear and filled with boring QTEs.

    I still haven't got the chance to play it yet, but i hope i can choose to play without a partner because working with partners is not my style, it takes away the thrill and makes the game less scarier, also i want to kick some ass comfortably without babysitting my stupid partner who keeps ruining my progress by dying each time from its stupidity, especially in professional mode !

    One amusing moment was when my friend and I ran away from a horde of zombies and went to one of those dual-player door open prompts. We had only just both tapped O when a zombie rushed in the middle of the frame, essentially going "me too me too me too!" Couldn't stop laughing at that, especially since the poor guy was just left behind.

    Agent Hunt mode sucks, aside getting put into games during sections where impossible to attack the player so you're effective just sitting with thumb up arse, when you do attack the player 9/10 times the AI saves him, providing the AI didn't specifically target you on the way to the player and use an instant kill attack.

    Oh here is a great one, I knock a player in dying status, as about to finish him he quits, I get 'Hunt failed'.
